Babysitter's charges raised to manslaughter

Aimee Cotton was arraigned at Edgartown District Court today after allegedly leaving two young children she was caring for in a car for several hours, one of whom later died. Police reported that Cotton placed an emergency call that a child she was sitting had stopped breathing and was turning blue. She was arrested on a warrant for charges including manslaughter, and a judge set bail at $21,000. Read more

Commission weighing several large projects

Hundreds of housing units are undergoing, or will be undergoing, review by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. Four housing projects are proposed, and they would add over 500 bedrooms for the Island. However, there are concerns over whether these projects are the right approach, and also questions over how much local control regulatory boards will actually have. Read more

From our editorial board

We argue for restoring the iconic Mill Pond back to the cold brook that it once was. We look to a similar project in Falmouth where cranberry bogs were returned to a natural stream, and where the community embraced what returned in its place despite initial controversy. Quote of the Day

"Conducting activities such as personal hygiene, and making bacon in the house, and putting her child's hockey gear together, is an intentional callous disregard for human life."

—The prosecutor overseeing today's manslaughter case.

North Abel's Hill, Chilmark

Sponsored by Tea Lane Associates

A rare opportunity in the iconic Abel's Hill Association which offers private association beach access, three tennis courts and walking trails. This multi-level Chilmark home was designed and built as an homage to architect Frank Lloyd Wright's ethos of open living spaces with flowing sightlines from room to room. The main house has a pocket view to the Atlantic that opens in the fall and winter months, wood floors, natural light and multiple levels. The living room features a contemporary Swedish woodstove and two skylights and sliding glass doors to a balcony making the space bright and cozy. The expanded primary bedroom suite is spacious and offers a private bathroom with generous jacuzzi tub. The kitchen and dining rooms open onto a large deck for entertaining that looks out over the back yard and lovely plantings. There are two guest bedrooms on the second floor separated by an open loft space currently being used as a study and sitting area. The lower level of the main house features a garage, additional storage, and a bonus room with private entrance.
