Rising concerns in Edgartown
With evidence that students are leaving for other districts, some parents at the Edgartown School have filed complaints that resources are being drained for high-needs students, like English learners. It comes with a significant rise in language learning students in Edgartown, and across the Vineyard, over the last decade. Parent’s frustrations have boiled over last week and into this week. Read that story here.
An Island treasure
The Island recently lost artist and conservationist Rez Williams. He was 81 years old and had spent decades painting and spent a lot of effort to help protect the Island’s environment. Islanders remembered Williams’ contributions to the Vineyard. Read more here.

Cyber woes
A state audit found the Steamship Authority lacking in cybersecurity training and asked for improvements to be implemented. The Office of the State Auditor also reviewed SSA use of federal funding and issues surrounding employees. Read more here.
MEETINGS

The Martha’s Vineyard Airport Commission meets at 2 pm on Thursday. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"While we are certainly happy to receive these funds, we will be seeking additional funding so we can promote awareness of human trafficking, so we can help our law enforcement partners build the investigations they need to bring their cases, so we can help survivors, and of course prosecute offenders."
— District Attorney Rob Galibois on expanding resources for counteracting human trafficking

Hot Topic Comment
"Is there a short term solution to provide a functional track in the interim? As I understand it, the track has deteriorated to an unsafe level and will soon not be able to be used for meets."
— Bruce Stone comments on our coverage of the turf debate

Hot Topic Letter
"The Martha’s Vineyard Commission’s approval for this project has expired. Given the significant advancements in science and new information that have emerged since its original vote, it would be beyond irresponsible for the commission to rubber-stamp an extension without reopening the record and holding public hearings. That said, given the amount of pressure the school committee majority and their surrogates apply to those who stand in the way of the plastic field — and how the commission, charged with protecting the Island’s waters, natural resources, and rural character, betrayed its mission by narrowly approving a massive plastic field in the first place — we should not take anything for granted."
— Representatives from the Field Fund write to us about the turf field

Today:
Catch the buzz, folks. Island beekeepers are invited to the monthly meeting of the M.V. Beekeeping Club. Share ideas, tips, and maybe how to stay calm while bees are buzzing around your head. At the Ag Hall. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Embracing the American dream
The African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard plans to move ahead with dedicating a plaque on the trail honoring the extraordinary achievements of Ambler Wormley, a business owner and local politician who had bought several properties on the Island. He came to the Vineyard in 1892, when he was 10 years old. Read more about who he was and his dedication in this story.
