Steamship considers expanding Islanders' standby line

The Steamship Authority expects vehicle congestion as a result of its upcoming terminal construction in Vineyard Haven and Woods Hole, and is proposing a partial solution of offering its standby line reserved for Vineyarders every day. This strategy would eliminate the unlimited standby line, though the SSA is considering bringing that back once construction is finished. Read more

Car break-ins strike Vineyard Haven

Tisbury police have received reports of six to eight unlocked cars entered in town, with one couple waking up today to find hundreds of dollars stolen. Few details are available so far, but Spring Street resident Cosmo Creanga said that himself, his next-door neighbors and others on the street were impacted, as well as homeowners elsewhere in town. OctoberFish comes down to the wire

The After Derby bonito was perhaps the most hard-fought category in this year's OctoberFish, which celebrates the Vineyard's lively late-season fishing. Julian Pepper took the top spot from Sam Bell, only to be outdone by Marc Campos on October 30 with a 6.4-pound shore bonito. Things weren't over, though, with Cameron Maciel landing quite the treat on Halloween. Read more

Coast Guard fields small spill

After a small petroleum-based substance was reported near Menemsha Harbor, the Coast Guard and harbormaster said it may have come from a passing boat emptying its bilge pump. An initial report suspected an offshore wind vessel, but the Coast Guard found otherwise and deemed the spill too small for containment. Read more
