‘We know where he’s at’
It’s been almost ten years since Pat Gregory, the longtime town moderator of West Tisbury, was shot and killed while hiking in California. Investigators on the case, which includes a sheriff’s department in California, an agent with the Bureau of Land Management, and an Island chief say that they have never been closer to arresting a suspect. Read that story here.
Fatal car crash
The West Tisbury Police Department says that Waylon Sauer, a junior at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, died last night in a car crash. Details are still very limited, but the single-vehicle crash took place on State Road in the area of Lambert’s Cove Road at approximately 10:38 pm. Police say that the 17-year-old drove off the road and struck a tree. That story is here.

Turf moratorium support
The Oak Bluffs Board of Health is seeking support from other town health officials for a potential moratorium on turf fields. This would halt the MVRHS athletics field project and give Oak Bluffs time to study possible impacts. A decision could be made as early as Nov. 28. Get the details here.
MEETINGS

The All-Island School Committee meets at 5:30 pm Thursday. Here is the
agenda.

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission meets at 6:30 pm Thursday. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"The lack of candor is outrageous and I think it shows an overall failure of management to hold the Steamship accountable. We’re lucky no one died."
— Falmouth SSA representative Peter Jeffrey is quoted in our story that the Steamship board was left in the dark on the results of an internal investigation

Hot Topic Comment
Amy Upton comments on the rejection of a proposed ADU pilot program during West Tisbury’s special town meeting this week: "When presented with an opportunity to make a positive difference they shot holes in an idea they hadn’t even bothered to read through, and from the sounds of those who spoke against it, had made up their minds before they got there. Sadly disappointing, but not entirely surprising. West Tisbury needs to do more and better or these Town meetings will grow sparser and even less well attended. People can’t show up and vote if they have no place to live."

Hot Topic Letter
"I cringe anytime I hear about an accidental oil spill, but it feels utterly irresponsible to intentionally dump extra fuel."
— Brigitta Wiesel writes to us about an airplane releasing fuel when a horse got loose on a flight

Today: The lovely Polly Simpkins invites us to her Online Rock ‘n Roll Book Club via MVY Radio. Tonight they talk about Lou Reed’s "The Art of the Straight Line." Follow the directions to Zoom in. 7 pm. –Connie Berry

It’s big doings at the Ag Hall with the Ag Society’s Annual Meeting. You can come by and learn about all the terrific things they do, but you can’t vote unless you’re a member. Maybe sign up? 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I haven’t gone yet because they won’t allow me to bring my desk inside, but Featherstone hosts its Annual Holiday Gift Show right now and it always gets me in the holiday spirit. The biggest decision is what not to buy. 12 to 4 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Dreaming about the cookies you’ll make next week? Us too. Back in 2018, ad sales aficionado Jenna Sylvia (formerly Jenna Lambert) wrote a story for us that included several cookie recipes, a few of them even seem healthy. Maybe not these decadent Peanut Butter Balls though. But heck, sometimes you need a little peanut butter with your chocolate.

Nurturing nature
Native Earth Teaching Farm in Chilmark is a multigenerational farm owned by Rebecca Gilbert. It was a failing sheep farm bought by her grandparents nearly 100 years ago. The family still harvest food on the farm, and they are also caretakers and do consulting work and a whole slew of other things. But more so than ever — with so few Americans farming — they are turning to education. Read the story here.
