Suspension in West Tisbury
A volunteer firefighter in West Tisbury has been suspended indefinitely after a restraining order was placed against him. Details of the order have not been made public and there have been no charges filed against him, but John Rose was the former fire chief in Oak Bluffs, where he was also accused of sexual harassment. A farm coalition in Chilmark
Eight Chilmark farms are seeking to clarify town zoning bylaws. Farmers say they want to host more educational classes, farm-to-table dinners, pop-up markets, and other events, but are unsure whether some of those activities are currently allowed. As farmers plan events for the upcoming season, some worry that the bylaw amendment process is too slow. Read more here.

A principal’s plea
The MVRHS principal, Sara Dingledy, took to the floor at last night’s school committee meeting asking that school committee members do their best to reach a compromise on the turf debate. She says the public discourse, lawsuits, and media attention have led to bad morale among the school’s staff, and there still isn’t progress on a new field. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"I was raised a Democrat, and I was born in the ’50s. In the ’60s, we were demonstrating every day for peace and freedom. And things are going back 50 years. Here we are again, trying to save democracy."
— Marvin Jones said,
rallying for the remembrance of the Jan. 6 insurrection

Hot Topic Comment
"Everything else to do with the Island school system seems to be dysfunctional, so it is of no surprise that they cannot reach an agreement over the superintendence contract. It’s a new year and hopefully we can get some new thinking and a fresh start for the future of the kids. The current group always seems to talk about it’s for the children, but in the end, it seems to be more about themselves."
— Bob Murphy, on the continued discussion over the superintendent’s contract

Hot Topic Letter
"I would like to thank all those that have helped to keep this small piece of the planet so naturally intact, and kindly remind all those that have lost track of this concept to look around and please appreciate what has been done."
— A letter from 2010 from Lisa Wilson on the
preservation of natural space on Martha’s Vineyard

Today: The Charter School hosts an Open House tonight for parents and students. Meet teachers and students and check out the campus. I don’t think we had many options when I was in high school. Then again, it’s hard to remember back that far. 5:30 to 7 pm. –Connie Berry

A 'zoomie' new year
Though the excitement of the new year begins to quiet as we settle into 2024, veterinarian Michelle Gerhard Jasny V.M.D. urges us to "try happy." After a break from the internet and its heartbreaking stories of veterinary mishaps and mistakes, Jasny found an article about the "zoomies," a phenomenon in dogs where they get a sudden burst of happy energy. After reading this article, Jasny sought out more things in her life that give joy: community. pet holiday cards, and her mission statement as a veterinarian, "Helping pets and people." Despite the hardships the year may bring, Jasny suggests learning from the dogs and choosing happiness. Read more here.
