Senior swim team captain Kuau De Assis recently broke the high school’s 50-yard freestyle record at a home meet against Barnstable, St. John Paul, and Cape Cod Academy. De Assis' time was just over 23 seconds — pretty impressive for a local who started competing four years ago. Read more

Leadership of the Mariposa Museum & World Cultural Center were uncertain of their future last year after a canceled fundraiser. But after visitors' support, a generous anonymous donation, and a grant, board members now say they're preparing for the regular season starting in June as well as taking registrations for a first-ever slate of events for year-rounders. Cyr starts fifth term, with housing focus |
After cruising to victory in November, Julian Cyr was sworn in last week as the Island’s representative in the state Senate. Cyr tells The Times that his focus will remain on housing. After getting a seasonal designation through the legislative process last session, the goal now is to solidify a revenue source to preserve and develop housing. Read more

Tisbury, vote now on library repairs |
Townspeople can vote until 8 pm today at the Emergency Services Facility to approve a $4.4 million borrowing request to renovate and maintain the Vineyard Haven Public Library. Library trustees previously raised $1.6 million for an addition to their building, but they've also been contending with deterioration of their building. "In short," said board of trustees chair Arch Smith, "we have water coming in from the roof, and water coming in from the ground, and we don't want it in the building." Read more
