Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
What do Berry Gordy, Ed Harris, and Jon Stewart have in common? They’re all blowing out birthday candles today. And they’re all sort of awesome, too. It’s also National Day of Giving, so don’t forget your favorite Island nonprofits. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Sankaty disagreements
The Steamship Authority Board met regarding the Sankaty incident, and members were divided on whether they were misled or not. Some representatives expressed transparency concerns while others wanted to move on. The discussion will continue in the new year. Get the details here.
Why a moratorium
The Oak Bluffs Board of Health is proposing a moratorium on synthetic turf fields, with the intention of protecting the town’s drinking water from emerging contaminants. The public had an opportunity to comment on the proposal, so several members of the school community raised their concerns. Some called for a moratorium on all PFAS products in Oak Bluffs, not just turf fields. Here’s that story.

Tick alert
Next month, the Chappaquiddick Island Association will be posting signs at trailheads to warn the public of the presence of ticks. Patrick Roden-Reynolds, of the MV Tick Project, is also planning to add tick warning signs on Chappaquiddick, and he would like to put up new signs around the Vineyard. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Unauthorized environmental destruction of the Cottle property wreaked havoc and devastation akin to a war zone."
— An excerpt in a lawsuit that a Menemsha resident filed when she claimed over hundred trees were taken down by her neighbors

Hot Topic Comment
"So let’s say PFAS aren’t an issue. Why does the NFL players union insist on grass fields to prevent injuries? Are the pro plastic fans okay with kids getting injured?"
— John Axel comments on our coverage of a possible 3-year moratorium on turf field construction

Hot Topic Letter
"I hope now that this lovely woman’s gesture to honor her mother gets extended further, and anyone who can will extend her generosity."
— Ellen Guiney writes to us about a
nice moment at Stop & Shop, in the Thanksgiving spirit

Today: I wish I had Bob Gatchell’s attitude for the holidays. For decades, the Gatchells have decorated their house on County Road in Oak Bluffs for the rest of us to enjoy. Take the drive and bring some nonperishable food items for the Island Food Pantry. You can’t miss it. 5 to 8 pm.

The Strand Theater screens "Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce" tonight. I’ll probably never be able to see her in person, so this is the next best thing for me. It plays for a few days, so read the description in case tonight’s a bust for you. 7 pm.
Tomorrow: How about spending your lunch hour ice skating? The M.V. Ice Arena is open and ready for you. Go on ahead, I’ll catch up. 12 to 1 pm.
