Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1940, the 40-hour work week went into effect under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act. We in the news business don’t know what it means, but it sounds pretty nice. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Seized drugs worth $2 million
When a cache of suspicious packages washed up on a Chilmark beach this summer, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) wasn’t able to confirm what was inside before conducting lab analysis. This week, we talked to the agent in charge of Cape Cod’s DEA, who said the agency has determined that the packages contained over 50 pounds of cocaine, worth almost $2 million. Here’s that update.
Bridge divide
After the Edgartown Highway Department undertook emergency repairs to Chappy’s Dyke Bridge earlier this year, the town’s select board is hoping that The Trustees of Reservations will be willing to help share the cost of a long-term restoration and maintenance plan for the iconic structure. While there’s some debate as to who is responsible for which side of the bridge, Edgartown says the Trustees’ over-sand-vehicle sticker sales could really help foot the $4 million bill. Here’s that story.

‘Battle in the Atlantic’
The Vineyard and Nantucket athletic departments announced the addition of three new trophies as part of a rivalry they are calling "the Battle in the Atlantic." Instead of just football and the Island Cup, both boys' and girls' soccer and field hockey teams will be competing against Nantucket for a Gold Anchor trophy. It starts this weekend and it’s part of an effort to give the other sports their fair due. Yet to be decided: what to do when you get a 4 - 0 sweep. For now, it’s just bragging rights and a loaded medal chest. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"I think it’s always exciting and dramatic to have another reason to battle with your rival. Of course, the girls will be playing for each other and the pride of winning against Nantucket, but it’ll be extra special bringing home the first anchor."
— Girls' soccer coach Matthew Malowski on the
introduction of the Golden Anchor award in the Nantucket rivalry game

Hot Topic Comment
"What a shame. HH response was on target. Why would they want to set up a warm place to have a meal and sleep for those who don’t have one in a neighborhood so unwelcoming. All would be wise to check out the facts of how HH has operated their shelter near schools and other neighborhoods…perhaps then they would be more welcoming."
— Cindy Flanders comments on the decision by
Harbor Homes to withdraw its request for a winter shelter in Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Letter
The Coalition to Create the Martha’s Vineyard Housing Bank writes to us about the governor’s new housing bond bill introduced last week: "We are tremendously grateful for your support and hard work the last several years.  We applaud the governor, her new housing secretary Ed Augustus, her transition team, and our representatives Julian Cyr and Dylan Fernandes, who worked diligently to assure that provisions critical to the Vineyard were included."
Today: The Spice Club meets virtually via the Vineyard Haven library, and this month it’s  tomato powder. I’m the spice queen at my house. If only I looked like Posh Spice. I’ll have to eat the spice and leave the food for a while. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

Take a deep dive into Emily Franklin’s "The Lioness of Boston" via the Chilmark library. It’s about Isabella Stewart Gardner, so I’m guessing it’s a very interesting read. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: This one is close to my heart: Art Exhibit by the Vineyard Independence Partnership at the Chilmark library. Some of the art can also be found in their 2024 calendar, which will be available for purchase. Open for viewing at the library at 10:30 am. –C.B.

Dog charming
Apparently it isn’t considered torture to dress up your dogs for Halloween. In fact, they might actually enjoy it. Dogs like attention. In our Dogcharmer column, Tom Shelby writes that his daughters would paint the nails of their doberman, Michelle, and she would love it. And Michelle was no slouch. She was an active search dog. Read more about the habits of dogs during the holiday here.
