Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
The O.J. Simpson murder trial ended with a not-guilty verdict on this day in 1995. On the lighter side, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" debuted in 1962. Wonder if it had as many viewers as the Simpson trial. It’s also National Mean Girls Day and National Boyfriend Day. Those two sound at odds. Let’s just celebrate it as Happy Tuesday and be done with it. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

A hard landing
The Steamship Authority says that a vessel, the Nantucket, bumped into a piling while docking in Oak Bluffs a little too hard. The bump led to a small fraction in the ship’s hull. The vessel sat out a few trips on Monday evening and Tuesday morning, but it was cleared for sailing by the Coast Guard today. No one was injured either. Read that story here.
Addressing anonymous funding
The MVRHS committee voted to dip into the FY2024 budget to fund a written statement on the legality of accepting anonymous donations from the school’s legal counsel. The motion passed 7-1."This is about supporting our school system and making sure people know that what we’re doing is appropriate," the superintendent said. Read more here.

Wastewater woes
An Oak Bluffs business, Notalot Farm Shop, is suing the town over a wastewater decision that is keeping it from opening operations. The issues started when the property was purchased in 2018. The complaint has been filed in Dukes County Superior Court. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"His personality is all in the songs and in these scenes. He’s all over it. It’s the essence of Mike … the best parts."
— Jemima James on "Billy Balloo," a
new play that late Islander Michael Mason worked on for much of his life

Hot Topic Comment
"As a parent with a child in the school system, I do not care about MCAS scores. I care about my child learning to be a critical thinker, develop a deep breadth of knowledge, develop good study skills and a strong work ethic, and learning to be kind and cooperative to her peers and teachers."
— Julian Wise comments on our story that the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School
is requiring intervention

Hot Topic Letter
"Considering the incessant SSA ship failings year after year, its refusal to have meaningful dialogue with anyone but itself, its cost overruns, which are forcing it to increase rates, and an abundance of other ill-thought-out management decisions, this is an outrageously generous approval rating."
— Damien Kuffler writes to us about a high approval rating for Steamship Authority general manager Bob Davis

Today: Who’s going to turn down a free Pizza Night? I didn’t think so. Come to the Chilmark Community Church for good food, friends, and games. All ages. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

This one piqued my interest, and now I’ll be trying to imagine what Warhol-inspired Cat Drawings look like. Barbara Freiberg leads this fun art class via the Vineyard Haven library. On Zoom, follow directions for the link. 6 pm. (Feel free to email a photo of your artwork to connie@mvtimes.com.)
Tomorrow: They’re playing MahJong live, in-person at the Vineyard Haven library. Pick-up games so there won’t be a lot of instruction, but I’m guessing you could learn a thing or two. Best part is you can meet new people and have live conversations. 10 am to noon. –C.B.

Ticking buggers
Although the summer season is over, the risk of tick bites is still prevalent on Martha’s Vineyard. On the Island, the tick season doesn’t really end, and if you’re a steak-lover, you better watch out for alpha-gal-carrying lone star ticks. In this Health Beat, learn about what to keep in mind for ticks on the Island and how to keep yourself safe.
