Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Some of us may have a three-day weekend coming up for Veterans Day. Let's take a moment to reflect on the soldiers that are with us and for all they’ve given. Our office will be closed tomorrow, which means no newsletter. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
NOTE: This newsletter might be cut short by your email program. View it in full here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: North Water Gallery

New Art arriving daily. Open 7 days a week. A warm welcome awaits you.
An international competitor
Geo Meikle is a student athlete on a scholarship at Lexington Christian Academy, where he plays hoops. He grew up in Edgartown, where he was a big presence on the volleyball court and the hardwood. He’s scheduled to travel to Europe this summer for an international competition. But his journey to get here has had its ups and downs. Read more about his venture here.
Trustees continuation
The Edgartown Conservation Commission’s hearing on The Trustees of Reservations' proposed beach management plan for Leland Beach, Wasque, and Cape Poge was continued yet again last night. The Commission could issue a ruling in December. Meanwhile, the public had an opportunity to voice their concerns at the hearing. Read more here.

Wrestlemania
Wrestling at MVRHS was recently promoted from a club sport to a varsity program. Although there are still some budgetary considerations that need to be dealt with, the school is putting its support for the sport. If you know a high schooler who might want to try grappling, read more here.
MEETINGS

No meetings Friday. But, here’s what you can expect on Monday:

The Edgartown Select Board meets at 4 pm on Monday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Waterfront House and Guesthouse, Chilmark Sponsored

Martha's Vineyard has many fine waterfront properties, but only a handful of exceptional ones. The Lee Family Compound is an exceptional, 3-acre waterfront property with breathtaking, unobstructed pond views from an elevated secure location, 750+ ft. of pond frontage, 48-ft. dock with separate mooring for easy access to Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound, and privacy without an abutter in view — all compliment the spacious, 5-bedroom, 5-bath, comfortable, well-built main house and the well-sited, 2-bedroom, 1-bath, contemporary guest house. The stunning views are everywhere, so 14 of the 16 rooms in both houses enjoy grand pond views. Because of the elevation, the sunsets, moonrises, and stargazing are some of the most remarkable the Island has to offer. The two-home compound can house 18 comfortably and is perfect for year-round family events. Come launch your canoe, kayak, or paddle board from spring to fall; swim, clam, or sail from private sandy beach off the point all summer long; sunbathe on your private dock or 3 decks or on the terraced lawn overhanging the cove; and enjoy seasonal holidays by a roaring fire with extended family and loved ones. This compound is proof that a picture is worth a 1,000 words (see Video Aerial Tour).
Quote of the Day
"Phone call was made[,] they will handle it."
— An employee with the Steamship Authority was quoted in a statement as part of an internal investigation reviewing why the Sankaty drifted away from its slip

Hot Topic Comment
Geoffrey Day with the Sea Run Brook Trout Coalition comments on our story about a possible year-round bass population on the Vineyard:
"I believe there is actually an overwintering, possibly spawning population in Massachusetts that has been greatly decimated by dams, overfishing and possibly other negative influences. As a lifelong striper angler on the north side of Cape Cod, I always wondered where they reproduced and why we never saw them in our adolescent ‘business’ of seining up minnows for sale to the local bait shop, diving, swimming, messing about etc."

Hot Topic Letter
Maura McGroarty writes to us asking that credit be given where credit is due on providing housing for veterans: "I believe that both the affordable housing committee and the taxpayers of Oak Bluffs should be recognized for their continued support of affordable housing endeavors that impact the financial status of the town."
Today: I love all things Irish, and films are right up there for me. The Edgartown library’s Foreign Film Night features "The Quiet Girl" from 2022. I wanted to see it, but never have. And now I can, along with refreshments. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

The Ag Society and Circuit Arts at the Grange Hall bring us the documentary about Allen Whiting, "A Painter Who Farms," tonight. I’m sure it’s a beautiful film, so go see it and support our local makers. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The M.V. Playhouse, fresh off the hugely successful "Billy Baloo" run, now brings us another Wicked Good Musical Revue with David Behnke, Peter Boak, Molly Sturges, Brian Weiland and a whole lot more. (Also happens Saturday, and Sunday.) 7 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Warm up this autumn with a creamy bowl of Pumpkin Hash or Irish Mashed Potatoes, recipes shared by Garden Notes columnist Abigail Higgins. If you make the potato dish, which is called colcannon, you can sing a traditional folk song about it while cooking in the kitchen. Here are the beginning lyrics:

Did you ever eat Colcannon, made from lovely pickled cream?
With the greens and scallions mingled like a picture in a dream.
Did you ever make a hole on top to hold the melting flake
Of the creamy, flavoured butter that your mother used to make?
