Leland threatens legal action

Tisbury’s select board held a closed-doors meeting last night along with Fire Chief Greg Leland, who has been on leave since July. The details are still vague about what happened, but Leland will no longer be a town employee starting Monday. The Fire Chief says he is considering legal action and claims the town terminated his contract. Read more

No vote yet for Spring Street

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission postponed the decision on whether to review 97 Spring Street after a long comment period pushed Thursday’s meeting late into the night. The public asked commissioners to protect their neighborhood of year-round residents from a development intended for transient workers, among other concerns. Read more

Tisbury changes course for town hall plan

The news keeps coming out of Tisbury — the town is considering relocating its police station to a consolidated town hall next to the former landfill in town. Voters at town meeting in December could have a say on that, as well as a library renovation and addition expected to cost nearly $9 million. Read more

Researchers were in the field on Thursday gathering data on the year-round bass population in Squibnocket. Part of the effort is to help the dwindling herring population, but they are also learning more about the bass and why they overwinter in the Chilmark waterbody. Read more

Barnacles stick together

The Barnacble Club is the Vineyard's oldest waterfront organization, now in its 161st year. Initially made of master mariners and officers looking to relax and share tales of life at sea, the group has changed a lot since. And as of a 2019, women are allowed to join. "To be a Barnacle club member, you must have salt in your veins," says president Mark Alan Lovewell. Read more

Fans of nature-inspired art should take note of this event, a live pairing of Lanny McDowell's avian photography with David Stanwood's piano work. The result is an improvisational, meditational reflection on birding. The artists will answer questions afterwards.
