Welcome to the State House

Thomas Moakley, a 30-year-old Falmouth Democrat, was sworn in as the new state representative for Falmouth, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Gosnold. He said he’s excited to get to work on issues like affordability and sustainability. Moakley will hold his first district office hours next week, including a visit to Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury on Jan. 10 to look for ideas for new legislation. Read more

A plan to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers

Island towns are working with the Vineyard Conservation Society, residents and businesss to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers, hoping for a warrant article at each annual town meeting this year. Conservation society leadership told The Times that noise and air pollution complaints are behind the push, as are concerns for workers' health. The proposals so far are to restrict gas blowers for three years before a ban. Read more

High school hockey stays hot

The high school varsity hockey squad made their way to New Hampshire last weekend for the annual Heuchling and Swift Memorial Classic. The Vineyarders played three games, tied twice and won one, continuing their undefeated record of 4-0-2 to start the season. Now, heading into a tough portion of their schedule, the boys are preparing to take on Saint John Paul II High School away on Saturday, and will be back to face off against Barnstable High next Wednesday. Tip of a hat

As a teenager spending summers here, Jocelyn Coleman Walton felt the tug of the Vineyard. Her grandmother's house is now a part of the African American Heritage Trail, and Walton moved here full-time nearly 80 years later in 2020. Now she volunteers as one of three chairs for the M.V. Diversity Coalition in an effort to share the importance of diversity to the younger generation and preserve what she loves about the Island. Read our coverage dedicated to Island volunteers here.

AT A GLANCE

COMMUNITY

Vineyarders on the year ahead

Town columnists are looking forward in our Community section. "I don't know what 2025 will bring," Hermine Hull wrote, hoping for a quiet year from West Tisbury. Joanne Lambert of Oak Bluffs covered local volunteer work, noting that Chicken Alley Thrift Shop needs donations. Claire Ganz in Chilmark shared a soup recipe for winter and offered a New Year’s resolution of sorts. "Here's to spending more time thinking and less time reacting," she wrote. You can read Tisbury's column here, and Aquinnah’s column here.

Quote of the Day

“A big impetus behind this, aside from a quieter community, is … [that] the emissions from this sort of equipment are significant. Stacked up against driving a car, it’s unbelievable.”

—Samantha Look, executive director of the Vineyard Conservation Society, on an effort to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers
