Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is Cranberry Day, an ancient tradition harvesting the fruits practiced and preserved by the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe. Also, yesterday was Indigenous Peoples' Day, and a celebration was held on-Island. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Celebrating Noepe
About 100 Islanders gathered this weekend for the third annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Noepe event at Mass Audubon's Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, which was hosted by Sassafras Earth Education. A number of Indigenous musicians and speakers with the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe were on hand to discuss the importance of the holiday and called for more representation for tribal members locally. Read our coverage and view the photos we captured here.
Edgartown wastewater options
Edgartown is looking toward developing a comprehensive wastewater management plan, and while the final costs of implementing the 20-year endeavor isn’t certain yet, it won’t be cheap. Tighe & Bond consultants showcased the current and future conditions for Edgartown’s wastewater situation, and there are many factors for the town to consider. Get the details here.

New citizens
The Vineyard hosted a naturalization ceremony Friday, the first modern one held on-Island. Fourteen people gained U.S. citizenship. Read reflections from new citizens Una McEntee of Edgartown (from Northern Ireland), Emerson Alves of Hyannis (from Brazil), and Lyudmila Lewandowski of Cape Cod (from Bulgaria) here.

Quote of the Day
"It deterred customers and donors from visiting our store, and before Sawyer [Realty] purchased the property, the Tisbury police would regularly request to review our security camera footage with a view of the structure so they could see the activity happening."
— Chicken Alley Thrift Shop’s director of operations Jessica Tartell
on the demolition of a house in Tisbury under review by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission

Hot Topic Comment
"It seems to me that debating whether vaccination is good or bad is like debating whether the world is flat or round. Vaccinations are one of the crowning medical and technological achievements of humanity that has allowed us to live life free of horrific diseases that plagued earlier generations."
— Julian Wise comments on our story that Island officials are contact tracing after a case of chickenpox

Hot Topic Letter
"Many people expressed a feeling of loss as well, even though they had never met them, but were invested because of all the on-line photos. We share your grief with you! The legacy continues on with our younger pup, Rufus, who comes from the same bloodline as Cooper and Chester."
— Paul Doherty and David Behnke write to us thanking the Island community for showing support after
two of their Gordon Setters passed

Today: It’s Open Mic Night at Island Music. Come sing your song, pluck your strings and entertain your friends and neighbors. Free. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

There were still a few tickets left for "Billy Baloo" at the M.V. Playhouse tonight. I saw it Saturday and it’s a sweet hoot. A really fun show with a long history behind it and a bright future ahead of it. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: "Stop Making Sense," a concert film starring the Talking Heads and that genius David Byrne, plays at the Film Center. My kids tell me it’s terrific. Sometimes I trust their opinions. 7:30 pm. –C.B.

Bob Clark
Mary Beth Daniels’ wonderful wooly world
Artist Mary Beth Daniels creates "paintings" out of dyed wool. She’s got a lot of fleece at her fingertips with three alpacas, sheep, mini donkeys, goats, and ducks living on her property. She dyes some of the fiber herself after having the herd sheared, and then skirts the fleece to remove all the vegetative matter, followed by washing, drying, and carding. Read Abby Remer’s story about Mary Beth here.
