Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Abe Lincoln was elected president by the American people on this day in 1860. In other political history, Hilary Clinton was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first, first lady to be elected to office. And, Richard Nixon lost an election bid for California governor, six years before he would become president. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our Island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
The landmark Vineyard Haven property sold for just shy of $24 million. Island investor David Malm purchased the property, adding to a substantial collection of properties on the Vineyard and Nantucket. Chip Chop was owned by Diane Sawyer and her husband for decades. Before them, it was built for famed Broadway actress Katharine Cornell. Read more here.
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School was recognized last week for their efforts to provide inclusive sports and activities for students with and without disabilities. The school received a "banner" designation during a ceremony held at halftime of a unified basketball game against Falmouth. Read more here.
Expanding the ‘Y’
The Island’s YMCA is seeking approval from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission to expand its Oak Bluffs facility by nearly 40,000 square feet. The proposed addition will serve as a family-friendly, multi use recreation center, which YMCA representatives say is what’s needed to meet the demand for its growing number of clients. With the new field house will also come a dance studio, cycling studio, conference room, and other multipurpose spaces. Here’s that story.

Quote of the Day
"The increase in home prices on the Vineyard has become disconnected with the Islanders’ income, literally making it impossible to secure housing."
— Michele Casavant, the principal broker at Vineyard Village Realty, on a 100-unit development in the works for Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Comment
"This is SO needed on the island!"
— Louise DuArt on 100 units of housing planned in Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Letter
"A denial of the current Notice of Intent would send a resounding message: Our community is not content with the crumbs left over from chronic mismanagement. We are resolute and committed to finding lasting solutions to these challenges. And while we remain ready to support the Trustees in regaining our trust, the status quo will not stand. We insist that the Trustees live up to their management and stewardship responsibilities and that the needs of our community be placed foremost among all considerations."
— Chappaquiddick landowners pen this essay calling for a better, more inclusive management plan for Cape Poge

Today: Get together at the West Tisbury library in a casual Drawing Group. No pressure, just basic drawing materials, tips, tricks, and guidance available. Maybe some prompts too. All levels. (That means everyone.) 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

I can remember tackling this one in college (one of the few things I remember). Philip Weinstein leads a six-part seminar on Tolstoy’s "War & Peace" on Zoom. Presented by Lifelong Learning Swarthmore via the Vineyard Haven library. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Check out Tiny Tuesday’s Microscope Exploration at the West Tisbury library. Bring something tiny you’d like to look at up close. An intergenerational option for those ages 8 to the sky’s the limit. 3 to 5 pm. –C.B.

Yoga in a Barn
There’s a little vinyasa, some yin, and a lot of community at the Yoga Barn in West Tisbury. Regardless of whether you are a practitioner or teacher, it appears to be a place for everyone. As owner Scarlet Johnson likes to say, "The main reason I built the Yoga Barn is to bring people together." Read more from Allison Roberts here.
