Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
The Siege of Yorktown took place on this day in 1781. The combined American-French forces was a decisive battle and one of the last of the Revolutionary War. Sounds like how our newsroom slayed the news this week. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

A new home
With plans to set up a new facility at 21 Hudson Ave., Harbor Homes will present their special permit request in a hearing before the Oak Bluffs zoning board of appeals on Oct. 18. The new facility will consist of two separate structures and will be able to house up to 25 individuals, including separate housing for families with young children. Read more here.
In averages of state statistics from the last three years, the Chilmark School is the state's second-highest in terms of kindergartners exempt from at least one required vaccine—and about 23 times the state average. M.V. Public Charter School ranks seventh. Even the lowest exemption rate on the Vineyard was twice the state average. Read that story here.
Not on the fence
The West Tisbury Historic District Commission recently made clear they were against having plastic fencing for the West Tisbury Village Cemetery. This stemmed from a proposed plan from the West Tisbury Select Board to replace a segment of the cemetery’s wooden fence with PVC. Get the details here.

Waterfront House and Guesthouse, Chilmark Sponsored

Martha's Vineyard has many fine waterfront properties, but only a handful of exceptional ones. The Lee Family Compound is an exceptional, 3-acre waterfront property with breathtaking, unobstructed pond views from an elevated secure location, 750+ ft. of pond frontage, 48-ft. dock with separate mooring for easy access to Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound, and privacy without an abutter in view — all compliment the spacious, 5-bedroom, 5-bath, comfortable, well-built main house and the well-sited, 2-bedroom, 1-bath, contemporary guest house. The stunning views are everywhere, so 14 of the 16 rooms in both houses enjoy grand pond views. Because of the elevation, the sunsets, moonrises, and stargazing are some of the most remarkable the Island has to offer. The two-home compound can house 18 comfortably and is perfect for year-round family events. Come launch your canoe, kayak, or paddle board from spring to fall; swim, clam, or sail from private sandy beach off the point all summer long; sunbathe on your private dock or 3 decks or on the terraced lawn overhanging the cove; and enjoy seasonal holidays by a roaring fire with extended family and loved ones. This compound is proof that a picture is worth a 1,000 words (see Video Aerial Tour).
Quote of the Day
"Because it’s open later, it’s where people book [to stay]. If we get rid of that in Oak Bluffs, we’ll just be Edgartown 2."
— JB Blau, owner of a handful of year-round establishments, criticized the select board in Oak Bluffs for closing bars earlier

Hot Topic Comment
"Unlike the housing ‘crisis,’ we have other problems that are more universal in terms of their impact on all residents, and which could actually be mitigated at the funding levels mentioned. For instance – we know that half of the nitrogen load in our ponds is coming from wastewater, primarily septic systems. The AirBNB taxes could be used to provide a funding source for a program designed to address excess nitrogen and phosphorous in our ponds."
— Bert Davis comments on an editorial pushing for the tax on short-term rentals to go toward housing

Hot Topic Letter
"I think most teachers adopt an aloof stance because they are unsure of the status of teaching generally … and because they are painfully aware of the low regard that most administrators, many politicians, and some in the general public have for them. In other words, the roots of their formality are in their insecurity, not their confidence."
— John Merrow offers his opinion on how giving teachers business cards could do a lot for education

Wednesday's contest answer:
John Jannis

For the latest installment of This Was Then, we look back at the Tisbury School, which broke ground in the spring of 1929. Looking back at building records and plans is fascinating. For instance, there were 10 bids, all but one from off-Island. And the brother of the winning contractor fell to his death during construction. The old school is currently under construction, nearly 100 years later. Read Chris Baer’s column here.
