Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

In 2020, IHT cut the ribbon for seven new, year-round, affordable apartments created by repurposing a bed-and-breakfast in Tisbury. Watch our film to see how we did it. You can help create critically needed affordable housing by clicking here to donate now.
'Gridiron' victory
Josephine Gautier, a sixth grader from the M.V. Charter School, is your winner for the all-Island spelling bee. She won it with ‘gridiron,’ after lasting a dozen rounds with her fellow Vineyard middle-schoolers. She’s now off to D.C. to compete on the national level. The bee was this morning and it was glorious. Read the story and see the sights here.

A new contract
Superintendent of Schools Richie Smith has signed a new, three-year contract. The new deal will keep him as the leader of the Island schools until 2027. His two-year contract was set to expire in July. He signed in 2022 when Matt D’Andrea left for Wareham. Read our coverage here.

Vineyard Haven park?
Tisbury is looking at potentially creating a new park in town, and they’re receiving funds from Vineyard Wind to do this. Town officials see potential in the area under consideration and are very early in the planning process. Read more here.

MEETINGS
The Edgartown select board meets Monday at 4 pm. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
“The narrative of the parents that I have gotten in my conversations is ‘Please support all kids. Make sure that the resources are in place in the school to do so.'”
— Superintendent Richie Smith on concerns surrounding inclusivity at the Edgartown School

Hot Topic Comment
“Stop wasting time and money talking with off-island companies. Look at the shamefully bad work they did and are still doing on our schools, libraries, senior centers, fire stations. We could do it so much better, and for less than half the cost.”
— Anna Edey on the state’s delayed drainage project at Five Corners

Hot Topic Letter
“These are large corporations that have made significant promises. The Vineyard can’t be left with a raw deal. And it’s incumbent on all of us to point out the shortcomings.”
— Our editorial on keeping the offshore wind industry accountable

Today: Watch an inspirational film based on a true story in "Arthur the King." The captain of a professional, outdoor adventure team befriends a wounded, stray dog named Arthur, who accompanies the team on a 435-mile endurance race, including running, hiking, mountain climbing, biking, kayaking, and more. Edgartown Cinema, 6:15 pm, with additional times over the weekend.

For a musical adventure, attend the Three Pianos Jam and enjoy tunes by Frank and Cleopatra Wilkins, Peter Halperin, Wes Nagy, David Stanwood, and other pianists, all playing on two baby grands and one upright. PathwaysArts in Chilmark, 7 pm. Doors open 6:30 pm.
This weekend: View photorealistic drawings in an Exhibit by Pointillism Artist Jack Ryan at Mocha Mott's in Vineyard Haven, during open hours through the end of the month. While out and about, stop at participating stores for "Daffodil Time," an event to raise funds for the M.V. Cancer Support Group, 9 am to 12 pm. Up-Island, join the Paint Party with Jazen's Art Studio at Polly Hill Arboretum, 1 to 3 pm, with advance registration. Catch the rhythm in a Jazz Film Screening and Discussion with MVYRadio's Dave Kish. West Tisbury library, 3 pm. In the evening, it's MVYRadio's Annual Night Out for Nonprofits, where people can learn about Island organizations. P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs, 7 pm.

On Sunday, gather with the community to hear "More Thoughts on Transformation" by the Unitarian Universalist Society, in person and on Zoom, 10 am. Also in Vineyard Haven, join the NAACP M.V. Discussion with Carole Copeland Thomas at the Hebrew Center, 2 pm. In Chilmark, meet local artists at a Group Exhibit Artist Reception at PathwaysArts, 3 pm. For those with little ones, have fun at M.V. Family Center's Barn Buddies playgroup at the Ag Hall, 3 pm. Wrap up the weekend with "The Monk and the Gun," a film about an American traveling in Bhutan to find a valuable antique rifle who crosses paths with a young monk. Film Center, 7:30 pm.

Staying in?
A classic dessert goes all-natural in the recipe for Red Velvet Beet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, by Simone McGraw. You can have fun decorating the top with sprinkles, edible flowers, or chocolate. The best part? All of your senses are engaged when savoring a bold red slice of this sweet confection with creamy layers. Maybe even Island time will stand still...
