Saving a ferry
With a bidding process in the works for the state pier in New Bedford, another island community is worried about potentially being cut off from the mainland: Cuttyhunk. Recently, the Town of Gosnold, Cuttyhunk Ferry Company, and the Buzzards Bay Coalition submitted a proposal in an effort to preserve the ferry’s spot at the pier. Read more here.
Hot water
High price tags for HVAC work has become a common impasse, including with municipalities looking to replace or upgrade old, outdated systems. There have been several examples of costs growing exponentially, and frustrations came to a head at a recent finance committee meeting. And a town administrator apologizes for not being transparent. Read that story here.

Booking uncertainties
The Martha’s Vineyard Black Book Festival wants to hold its event at the Island Inn in Oak Bluffs, but not everyone is sold that it’s the right spot for the event. Town officials were concerned about traffic and the residential zoning of the area, while neighbors argued another location would be more appropriate for the festival. Read more here.

Custom Build with a Pool, Edgartown Sponsored

Newly built, custom home located in Katama, just a short walk to Edgartown and a quick bike ride to South Beach. A new owner will appreciate the thought and attention to detail that has been incorporated into this home, which was designed and built by an experienced building company, Speedwagon Partners. Featuring a combination of contemporary design and expertly crafted details, like bespoke cabinetry, porcelain and quartz surfaces, and white oak flooring, the home instantly feels very luxurious and elegant. There are a total of four bedrooms and four full baths, plus two half-baths and two laundry rooms. The living spaces are open to each other, yet also defined, with an abundance of natural light thanks to oversized windows and high ceilings. The living room fireplace, Wolf and Thermadore kitchen appliances, and a 10-foot quartz island are just some of the features that make this property stand out. A finished lower-level completes the home, and the property is well-landscaped, focusing on a gunite pool and a hot tub with tasteful stonework, plus a gas fire pit and decking.
Quote of the Day

Hot Topic Letter
"When did we start to care more about Airbnb rentals and other short-term rentals than we do about the men and women who, I would say, make up more than 80 percent of the economy here on the Island?"
— Oak Bluffs Landscaping and tree business owner and property owner Dana Mylott in response to zoning proposals in O.B.

Today: MJ at the Playhouse leads Theater Fun for Adults, a little acting and improv. Shake off those inhibitions and let yourself go. Only thing stopping you is you. Or maybe your adult children who like to tease you. That might just be me. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Anyone else’s mother have a crush on Claude Rains? "Casablanca" plays at the Edgartown library tonight as part of their vintage Valentines film series. This is your last chance to get misty-eyed this month. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: It’s amazing what you can do in a chair these days. Now they’ve come up with Chair Volleyball over at the Tisbury Senior Center. Everyone can play, from wheelchair bound to those who like a mean game of sand volleyball. I love it. 11 am. –C.B.

Good company at Cozy Corner
It has good eats, it’s eco-friendly, and it holds salsa dances every Friday night — what more could you want from a cafe? Owner Iggy Vukoje spoke about the steps taken to open this cafe: a J1 visa, an environmental science degree, and a lot of trial, error, energy, and passion. Reflecting on his establishment, he emphasizes the cafe’s driving sentiments of inclusivity, sustainability, and community. Read more about it here.
