When Michael Mason died in February this year, he left behind a loving family, but he also left behind his life’s work in the form of a musical tale that takes place in the late 1800s in a tiny mining town in the Colorado Rockies: "Billy Baloo." Jemima James and her two sons, Willy and Sam Mason, lived with his extraordinary devotion for this epic work for more than 40 years. Now it will come to life on the M.V. Playhouse stage, beginning this weekend and running through a dozen shows. Read about it here.

With assistance from Edgartown Police Thursday, Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents apprehended a 31-year-old man who’s been wanted by Brazilian law enforcement for his alleged role in a 2021 murder. Immigration officials say the suspect has been residing in the United States for an unknown length of time. Here’s that story.
Ladyfest has raised funds each year for Connect to End Violence, an M.V. Community Services program providing free and confidential services to those impacted by domestic or sexual violence. This year, a number of sets were held at the Ritz and Dos Más, and artists included Kate Taylor and Lucy Mayhew. Get a look at the scene and read how this year’s event went here.

Quote of the Day
"There’s no sugar coating that this is a high stakes test. We are looking at how to immediately support students and do things that are in our practice."
— School superintendent Richie Smith on the results of the recent MCAS scores

Hot Topic Comment
"I am extremely allergic to the pertussis vaccine! Due to my reaction I became epileptic (I was 1 in 30k babies that had that reaction from ‘81-‘85). When there is a pertussis outbreak, I cannot leave my house. I was lucky growing up because the majority of people were pro-vaccine back then."
— Jackie Cavanaro comments on a story that nearly 1 in 4 Chilmark School kindergartners have exemptions for vaccines

Hot Topic Letter
"There was a time when we looked to our leaders for inspiration. They shared our values and we felt that they had our best interests at heart. What I feel now and what those I teach in my Organizational Behavior & Leadership classes at the US Coast Guard Academy tell me is that they see little of what they value in today’s leaders, the leaders that are supposed to serve us. That is an awful shame because these aspiring leaders depend on visible role models to guide them."
— Mike Bellissimo, a faculty member at the Coast Guard Academy, writes to us about the fear of a government shutdown and what happens to federal workers during a shutdown
