Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is World Press Freedom Day, established by the United Nations to commemorate the role the press plays in society and remembers journalists who lost their lives while pursuing truth. Coincidentally, May 3, 1984 is also when the MV Times published its first paper, meaning today is our 40th anniversary! We’ll be continuing to cover the issues that matter to the Vineyard community. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

IHT is working hard to make sure Island residents have the year-round homes they need. But the demand is still greater than the supply.
Island dispensary closing
The operators of Fine Fettle, one of two marijuana dispensaries on the Island, and the operators of the only grow operation, announced that they will be closing after this summer. They say that it’s hard to compete with off-Island businesses, when summer visitors have a hard time getting out to West Tisbury. Read that story here.
Times hits 4 decades
It’s an exciting time for us here at The Times. We are celebrating 40 years. Our first paper was published on this day in 1984. A longtime publisher and editor shares his reflections and history on the paper; our current publisher, who recently won the James F. Foley Foundation World Press Freedom Award, shares his reflections. And here’s an excerpt of our first editorial with the origin mission.

A grand 50th derby
At first light tomorrow, Duarte’s Pond will be crowded with kids hoping to win the annual Kids Trout Tournament, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Cooper "Coop" Gilkes discusses its inception and reminisces on 50 years of the tournament. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"I think people are realizing West Tisbury is an aging community and we need to get [younger people] more engaged."
— West Tisbury planning board member Matt Merry said on younger generation’s participation in town’s visioning session

Hot Topic Comment
"A wonderful retrospective and important reminder of the noble mission of journalism in an era when what is happening in so many ‘news’ places is corrupted and damaging to our way of life. Thank you Doug for reminding us."
— Mike Zoll on Doug Cabral’s essay on 40 years of newspapering

Hot Topic Letter
"We realize the town of Edgartown owns most of the land between the properties, and there is money allocated for this project, but in our opinion, any hiker lured in by the lovely trail name would be sadly disappointed, and very uneasy about intruding on private citizens’ homes."
— Christopher and Sandra Trailor write to us about a proposed Edgartown swimming path

Staying in?
Cookbook author Catherine Walthers shared this recipe many years ago: Pasta with Grilled Chicken, Garlic, and Olives. She also gives tips for preparing dishes that include leaf broccoli, which is all leaf and no sprouts. It's similar to kale, but a little sweeter.

If your family has a recipe to share with the community, send it to us at recipes@mvtimes.com, and include a photo of the dish and a brief backstory if you have one.
