New Sankaty details
Since the Sankaty drifted from its mooring in July, records received from the Steamship Authority reveal that multiple employees flagged improper procedures and that the vessel wasn’t secured properly days and hours before the incident. There were also some impacts to service on that day. Get the latest here.
Legal opinion withheld
The MVRHS Committee received a legal opinion from its counsel about the acceptance and use of anonymous donations. However, this document will not be shared with the public. The committee plans to get clarification regarding parts of the opinion from its attorney. Read more here.

Non-migratory bass?
Local researchers and the Aquinnah Wampanoag’s natural resources department are investigating the possibility of a year-round bass population living in Squibnocket Pond. It would be the only such population confirmed in Massachusetts. Our reporter Daniel Greenman took in the tagging process recently. He takes a look at what this would mean for local herring and for understanding the habits of bass. Read the details here.

Quote of the Day
"The causeway’s current condition is not a function of misuse or overuse caused by the Trustees. Rather, the causeway’s condition is a function of the fact that the bulkhead is 170 years old, that it has been exposed to harsh and often extreme elements throughout that time."
— Trustees of Reservations attorney Dylan Sanders refuting claims that the Trustees are on the hook for Dike Bridge repairs

Hot Topic Comment
"Nice to see Seastreak and the SSA reviving the commuter service. I was one of the original commuters in 2003. I lived in Mattapoisett but I worked on MV at MVCS. Though the price exceeded the SSA, the convenience was without question."
— Richard Du Tucci on Seastreak cutting the
ribbon on its commuter service

Hot Topic Letter
Vicki Divoll gives her opinion on the latest school committee decision to withhold a legal opinion from the public: "So again Island taxpayers will have to pay lawyers to untangle the mess that has been wrought upon us by the school officials and committee. And again we will be kept in the dark about what their lawyers say they must do, or may not do."
Today: I think our whole office could use this on a Wednesday: Restorative Reset with Jelisa Difo. it involves postures close to the ground, which is where I would likely stay once I got down there. Edgartown library. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Airport Fitness hosts Millennial Pickleball Night. Meet new friends or bring an old one. Find out what all this hullabaloo is surrounding pickleball. Maybe you should bring earplugs? 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Here’s a cheery topic: You’ve Been Dying to Know about Funeral Planning. It may make us squirm a bit, but it’s really smart to figure this out before it’s too late, if you know what I mean. It’s a webinar, so register through the link. Edgartown library brings it to us. 7 pm. –C.B.

From family photos, examples of older homes, and a replica of a camp, maybe there’ll be something you recognize from your own family history. Read Abby Remer’s story about what is showcased at the exhibit.
