The White Deer of West Tisbury

This is the best visual we have of a white deer spotted recently in West Tisbury that has Islanders transfixed. Some cultures have different meanings for what the stag represents, from regeneration to the divine. However, state officials are encouraging the harvest of the animal, because along with its rare pigmentation come abnormalities like a damaged spine and clubbed feet. But trying telling someone to hunt a nearly mystical creature. Not on this Island. We have a video, but if you get a clearer visual, we're interested. Read more

Note-o-matic

The Island’s high school committee may be stepping into the future for help creating their official minutes. The school's many committee and subcommittee meetings are straining their human notetakers, and Zoom’s AI summaries and transcriptions could help take up the slack. The committee will likely be legally required to have a human look over the AI’s output, however. Read more

Goats go for $10 each

Over 150 goats make up the M.V. Land Bank’s grazing program, and a bidder has offered to buy them all. This is after a parasite among the herd halted the conservation group’s program. The buyer will take the goats off-Island, where they will be butchered. The Land Bank is developing a plan for its next herd. Read more

Eighty-five charges

An update to our story from yesterday in case you missed it: Eric Juna Johnson, the alleged perpetrator of last month's tri-town thefts, is suspected of committing more crimes by himself than the total amount of breaking-and-enterings, larcenies, and stolen property cases reported in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs all of last year. Tisbury is so far harder to glean, but details from the day of the arrest warrant's execution have also come out from the Oak Bluffs Police Department. Read more

Quote of the Day

"There's no honor in being the guy who shoots a deer that captivates the imagination of soft-hearted nonhunters."

Islanders Write

Islanders Write has been bringing writers with ties to Martha's Vineyard together for free panel discussions and workshops focused on talk about the art, craft, and business of writing since 2014. In 2025, Islanders Write is expanding into March with a weekend of writing workshops for both children and adults.

We are grateful to all the writers, editors, publishers, sponsors, book sellers, volunteers, readers and audience members who have been part of this event over the years.

We invite you to join the MV Times as we continue to encourage and celebrate the growing community of writers and literary arts on Martha’s Vineyard. We look forward to seeing you and talking shop at Featherstone Center for the Arts for Islanders Write in March and in August.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation on this Giving Tuesday through the MV Community Foundation to help support Islanders Write.
