What's next for 150 unhoused Islanders?

The Island’s only homeless shelter is expected to close in a few weeks. While managers plan to work with Vineyard churches to house individuals for the winter months, reports from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission indicate that towns' lack of progress to address the issue by summer is only letting the homelessness problem grow worse. Getting out the kinks

The new Steamship Authority vessel, the Barnstable, has had a few hiccups. The boat is accustomed to warmer waters, which caused a mechanical issue. It’s not going as fast as anticipated, nor carrying as much weight. Steamship management said they are resolving the issues, and they shouldn’t be a problem for sister vessels that are coming online for the Vineyard later this year. Read more


Meanwhile, Vineyard reps on the Port Council and Steamship board are hosting an informational meeting at the P.A. Club, and the public is encouraged to attend. The bar will be open. Read more

Lazarus steps down as CTAC head

Suellen Lazarus has decided not to seek re-election as the president of the Chilmark Town Affairs Council, the nonprofit that runs summer programs at the town community center. Lazarus told The Times that she planned to serve one term before retiring. This comes as a town report on the council’s management was released moments ago. Read more

Lara the dalmatian has suddenly become afraid of crossing the door to her fenced yard. But Dogcharmer Tom Shleby has seen this before, and says the solution is luring the dog with a treat. Failing that, carefully drag the dog across the threshold and repeat the first two steps until they can cross on their own. This reminds Shelby of a lesson he taught to Chris Rock's Yorkie.
