Vineyarders are being hit hard by rising home insurance costs, fueled by storm damage across the country and increasing housing expenses. We partnered with the Cape and Islands NPR station, CAI, to hear how the market is hurting you. Hundreds of homeowners told us they are struggling to stay here with premiums climbing, with some frustrated at providers for jacking up costs and requiring extensive home repairs just to be covered. Read more, and see all our prior coverage of homeowner’s insurance on-Island here.
CAI reporter Eve Zuckoff has also been covering homeowners’ insurance woes on the Vineyard. Click here for her piece, the other side of today’s collaboration. Also see CAI’s previous coverage, a discussion with State Senator Julian Cyr and insurance experts. For more reporting on how climate change affects the Cape and Islands, go to CAI's climate collection. You can also find short videos about their home insurance collection on CAI’s Instagram page, @wcai_npr. |

Quote of the Day
|
“I felt like, wow, I’ve never misbehaved — I was like the perfect customer. They’ve just been taking my money all these years. I couldn’t understand. I think at first I felt, you know, targeted, but then I heard it happened to everybody else."
—Deborah Mello Orazem of Edgartown changed insurance companies after getting non-renewed by her provider. |
