Black business history

There are now a total of 39 sites on the Martha’s Vineyard African-American Heritage Trail. Ambler B. Wormley, born in Virginia, moved to Martha’s Vineyard at 10 years old, and by 1928 ran the Wormley Socony gas station in Oak Bluffs. On Sunday, the deBettencourt family that bought the station from Wormley was praised for keeping his history alive, and David deBettencourt had the honor of unveiling Wormley’s plaque. Read more

A lifeline, literally

A woman was transported to Falmouth Hospital and is in recovery after suffering a heart attack on the way from Woods Hole. The SSA had to turn its vessel around, and the woman's family told The Times that they're grateful for the crew's quick response. Three volunteers also stepped forward after a call for help over the intercom. Read more

Storm packs a small punch

Do it for her

The grand prize for this year's Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby recently arrived by ferry to the Island. May the best fisherman win this Eastern 22-foot SISU.

AT A GLANCE

Sculpting Vineyard history

You may recall the apparent theft this spring of Rebecca Amos’ plaque on the African-American Heritage Trail. The plaque has been replaced, and now a seven-foot tall sculpture is set to honor its subject. Amos, who was enslaved in Chilmark, was a free woman and owned land at Great Rock Bight at the time of her death. Barney Zeitz’s “Rebecca” sculpture is set to be unveiled on October 6 at the Native Earth Farm in Chilmark, and Zeitz will discuss his work on at 5 pm on September 23 at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. Quote of the Day

“It’s difficult to know how many of the herd have died from the parasite; we can’t run autopsies on every goat that died because a lot of goats do still die of old age.”

—Land Bank herd manager Winston Bell on the fate of beloved goats that he plans to auction off
