Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
As you’ll see more in today’s Minute, the Martha’s Vineyard Times received a number of awards this weekend from the New England Newspaper and Press Association. While we aren’t in it for the glory (at least most of us), we do appreciate a pat on the back once in a while. Putting out the news and information of the Island is a true team effort that takes a considerable amount of work. We hope you enjoy. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

More Tisbury housing?
A real estate developer is taking another shot at making the EduComp building in Tisbury into housing units. The first time around, there was some contention over the project and it was ultimately denied. The Martha’s Vineyard Commission recently held a public hearing about it, but decided to give the public some more time to provide input. Read more here.

Hard work rewarded
The New England Newspaper and Press Association honored the staff at The Times this past weekend during its annual award ceremony. Among the distinctions was a first place nod for best front page for an issue in 2022. And former news editor George Brennan was elected into the association’s Hall of Fame. Read our coverage here.

Steamship dillema
The Steamship Authority experienced a lot of cancellations on Monday. From gusty winds to crew shortages, ferries were kept in port for a number of trips. It's not the first time the SSA has struggled with crew shortages in recent months. Read that story here.

MEETINGS

Quote of the Day
"I’m more optimistic than ever that the legislature will realize a local-option transfer fee on real estate this session [...] I feel buoyed by the speaker’s comments that endorse the policy, and I’ll continue to work to advance a transfer fee in the Senate. The revenue from a transfer fee will be a lifeline to Islanders struggling to afford to live on Martha’s Vineyard. It is my highest priority to get a local-option transfer fee passed into law."
— Senator Julian Cyr on the push for new housing legislation for the Island

Hot Topic Comment
"It is a debatable technology. Do we really want to pay more for power, look at towers and wind turbines, reduce our fisheries, impact our ocean views with a failing industry? And it is failing in terms of expectations to reduce our Co2. It is a noble idea in a way, but it is also problematic."
— Frank Brunelle on
wind turbine impacts on the Island's fishing industry and environment
