Vineyarders were enchanted last night with a rare treat: the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. According to experts, this was a severe geomagnetic storm with the Sun emitting electrically-charged particles toward Earth. The result was a red hue cast over the Island at about 7 pm. The state held a highly anticipated hearing last night over the management of the state forest, and they got an earful. One woman who said she was displaced by the clearing of a homeless encampment earlier this summer recounted how she lost her wedding dress and photos of her deceased children. She castigated the state for not giving proper warning, and was joined by public health officials. Read more

They're special in the bureaucratic sense. West Tisbury's town meeting is Tuesday, and high on the agenda is building a water tank at Lambert’s Cove to help fight fires.
