Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
We can think of two important events that happened on this date: "Saturday Night Fever" premiered, which gave a few of us disco fever. And Frank Sinatra was born on this day in 1915, causing many of us to realize just how old we are. We’re inspired to listen to some oldies today. Melly Meadows' daffodil mission
Vineyard Haven resident Melly Meadows was planting flowers outside the post office on Sunday, as part of her goal to plant 15,000 daffodils in locations around the Island ahead of spring. Meadows, who worked as an international brand spokesperson and performing artist before contracting lupus, sees her "guerrilla gardens" as a way to spread joy outside of the performing arts. ‘Indelible part’ of O.B.

The African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard held a ceremony honoring Robert Hayden at the Oak Bluffs library. The group unveiled the newest site on the trail, dedicated to the researcher, historian, writer, activist, and educator. Hear what locals had to say about the "visionary" and "great man" here.

Sunrise wind
Federal officials announced the completion of an environmental review of the wind project south of the Vineyard called Sunrise Wind. Instead of the 94 turbines originally proposed, the federal agency charged with reviewing the project is recommending 84 turbines. That’s to protect cod and other marine species’ habitat. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"For me, [Hanukkah has] become a very powerful holiday, in the sense of the meaning of bringing light into darkness, and noticing the relationship between dark and light and all that. Dark is where things are born. That’s where things gestate and come to life. And it is the darkest time of the year."
— Rabbi Brian Walt, during a
celebration at the Hebrew Center Sunday evening

Hot Topic Comment
"At a celebration of Yossi’s life held in Colorado, Yossi’s many school friends there remembered him as a funny, smart, talented, and most of all caring person who was always there for his friends, and who thought deeply about the meaning of life."
Katherine Scott on the
passing of a former Vineyard student

Hot Topic Letter
"The Oak Bluffs Association appreciates all the businesses that make this time of year special by staying open for the community to shop local. Happy Holidays to all and peace in the New Year."
— Billie Jean Sullivan from the Oak Bluffs Association thanks the community for helping to make the holidays brighter

Today: Head to Owen Park in Vineyard Haven tonight for a Hanukkah Celebration and Public Menorah Lighting. Live music, plus hot soup to keep you warm. Everyone is welcome. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

Donald Nitchie and his poetry group are on tap at this week’s Writing & Poetry gathering at Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern. You can read Nitchie’s prompt in the link and come up with your own poem to bring. There’s a new gathering start time: 7 pm instead of 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The P.A. Club hosts a Holiday Bazaar Wednesday and Thursday this week, 3 to 8 pm. Great vendors, then add Mo’s Lunch into the mix. And on Wednesday at 5, my friend Rose Guerin plays music with her friends. That makes it truly a few of my favorite things. –C.B.

A mini holiday
The Dickens Christmas Village is up and running at the Carnegie Heritage Center in Edgartown, and it will be on display until Dec. 22. The village is made up of hundreds of individual pieces courtesy of Debbie and Dave Brow. Debbie has been collecting them for over two decades. Staff say they’ve had hundreds of people pop in for the cozy display since it went up around Thanksgiving. Read more here.
