Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is National Frozen Yogurt Day… which makes us wonder, why February? We’re frozen enough. That said, some frosty delights do sound good. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

A stand down
With the Oak Bluffs planning board dropping its turf appeal last month, there is further de-escalation as the MVRHS school committee voted to pull back from its plans to build a turf field. School committee members, at a meeting last night, say they want a fresh start and to build good will with the Island as they look to the future for a much bigger project. Read that story here.
Freight traffic resistance
Tisbury town officials say they have some serious concerns about a New Bedford freight company trying to bring service to Vineyard Haven. There is a fear about the impact to congestion within the harbor, as well as traffic from larger trucks and vehicles entering into Five Corners and the rest of downtown. Read that story here.

‘It’s happening there’
As in Martha’s Vineyard. That’s the message from a press conference held on human trafficking for the Cape and Islands region, hosted by the region’s district attorney. The Cape and Islands office announced they are expanding efforts to train locals how to recognize sex trafficking and to train police departments how to respond. You can read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"What is happening right now in the school is just a snowball effect of — post-COVID — but anxiety and lack of communication. And if you do not have happy teachers and happy kids, you will not have happy parents."
— Former Edgartown school committee member Kelly McCracken on the district losing students to school choice

Hot Topic Comment
"I object to any construction of off offshore windmills that are visible from land. However, if that can’t be achieved at least paint the windmills a color scheme that will camouflage their appearance as much as possible."
— John Mulcahy comments on the federal government opening up comments for Beacon Wind

Hot Topic Letter
"The "not in my backyard" folks have had their say at public hearings, but the concerns they have voiced have been addressed by engineering know-how. It is time for the planning board (meeting at 5:30 pm on Feb. 12) to agree with the voters, and use this small parcel of land for what good governance is about: meeting the needs of the residents."
— Susan Silk writes to us about a senior affordable housing development in West Tisbury

Staying in?
You're going to love this Butternut Squash Salad, brought to us by the good folks at Island Grown Initiative. Savory roasted winter squash with a fine, fine maple vinaigrette. We like this one for its simplicity and use of that extra squash we have hiding in the Times’ kitchen.
