Stiff resistance
Harbor Homes pitched its proposal to open a homeless shelter in Oak Bluffs before the town’s zoning board of appeals. Proponents argue the Island is in need of a permanent location. But, residents in the area say they support the idea, but not the location. They fear for the safety of school children and worry about disturbances from the facility. Read our coverage here.
Critical infrastructure
Senators Markey and Warren have asked a senate committee to authorize Vineyard Haven's Beach Road and Oak Bluffs’ jetties under the Water Resources Development Act. If authorized by the senate committee, the sites would qualify for federal funds to plan their reconstruction. Erosion has made the Beach Road seawall and Oak Bluffs jetties vulnerable to storms, and they require significant repair. Read more here.

The first turbine
Vineyard Wind announced that its first complete turbine has been built. The tower, with the blade, is about 850 feet tall. Vineyard Wind officials say that they expect to begin delivering power to the grid by the end of the year. But they say that finishing construction of the first turbine is a monumental moment in their project. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Given the ongoing deterioration, the seawall is expected to collapse and breach the adjacent Beach Road causeway, impacting emergency access, utilities, and habitat important to the Martha's Vineyard economy,"
— U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren about the Beach Road seawall in Tisbury

Hot Topic Comment
"I agree, trees are needed in the square. IMO, the rotary is a waste of money, they will lose parking spots. Main Street parallel parking, did they ever make up the spaces lost there?"
— Wilson Everly on construction beginning on a new roundabout in downtown Oak Bluffs

Hot Topic Letter
"So what hope can white supremacists have? In a worst-case scenario, even if a large number of white men could be united to engage in an armed insurrection, it is almost inconceivable that white supremacists could amass enough force to seize and maintain control of our national government."
— R.E.L. Knight writes to us about white supremacy following recent events on the Island

Ghostess with the mostess
If you know writer Holly Nadler, you probably know that she is a great teller of ghost stories. She is also the author of three books of paranormal tales — "Haunted Island," "Vineyard Supernatural," and "Ghosts of Boston Town." For many years, she also ran a lucrative business offering ghost tours of the three down-Island towns. But what you may not know is that Nadler also reads tarot cards on the side. Gwyn McAllister writes about it here.
