Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
"How the Grinch stole Christmas" aired for the first time in TV history on this day in 1966. The Dr. Seuss story has since become a holiday favorite in multiple renditions. What are your top 3 holiday movies? We’re going with "Elf," "Home Alone," and "Family Stone." If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Storm causes flooding, outages
There were scattered outages on Monday morning from strong southwest winds, as well as flooded roads. Times’ reporters in the field noted cars that had stalled on Beach Road in Vineyard Haven, as well as trees that had taken out power lines in Oak Bluffs and Tisbury. National Weather Service reported the high wind speed on the Island was 59 miles per hour. Read our coverage here.
The Martha’s Vineyard Commission approved the nearly 40,000 square-foot expansion of the YMCA during a recent meeting. Meanwhile, commissioners retroactively approved the demolition of a century-old Tisbury house, which had been razed earlier this year. And they have new leadership. Read that story here.
The Healey Administration announced a substantial amount of federal funding that has been earmarked for the replacement of the Bourne and Sagamore bridges, which have been considered functionally obsolete. While the funding was just south of $400 million, there’s still about $4 billion needed for the project. Here’s that story.

Quote of the Day
"At the same time … you’re at a point where you must change, you must transform. You have a technology debt … basically, because of the strength of the team, you’ve been able to get away with an underinvestment in technology."
— Consultant Thomas Innis on the IT issues with the Steamship

Hot Topic Comment
"The post office is a place where we all pass and it’s a central location for the island. The workers deserve the joy as much as the people. If ordered to remove them, I will ask for people to help protest. Of all the places where we need kindness the most it’s within our government and nation."
— Melly Meadows McCutcheon on our coverage of her effort to plant 15,000 daffodils across the Island

Hot Topic Letter
"The frightening thing is that we know but still talk about using the dangerous artificial turf that our school kids will fall on and slide across, grinding bits into the bodies and uniforms we then wash and unthinkingly dump that water right into the ground. All this while the rains also wash the problem directly from the turf into our single source aquifer."
— Kay Mayhew of Vineyard Haven writes to us about corporations and the dangers they pose

The Vineyard’s tea party
The state has been awash in Boston Tea Party celebrations this weekend. On the Island, Mrs. Sarah Allen hosted an 18th-century tea party at the Chilmark Public Library. Allen (portrayed by Norah Van Riper, M.V. Museum manager of education and public programs), has been in the living history business for more than 20 years, portraying various women, known and unknown, from the Middle Ages through the American Civil War, and has personally thrown tea into Boston Harbor. Read that story here.
