Local agents say this insurance situation for Island homeowners is unprecedented, and that the reason is climate change and the higher odds of natural disaster that come with it. Public schools consider regionalization |
Vineyard school committee members are exploring whether to increase regionalization of the Island’s public school districts. The discussion is still in its infancy, though superintendent Richie Smith said there seems to be more enthusiasm for the idea than in the past. There are also several potential benefits to consider with a regionalized Island school district, like increased efficiency and cost savings. Read more |

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission approved the subdivision of two Edgartown properties, which will be sold as housing lots. While some of the lots will be sold at market rates, these will help subsidize affordable housing on the other subdivisions. Read more

Fire on State Road |
An electrical structure fire broke out at 221 State Road in Vineyard Haven this morning. Thankfully, nobody was home at the time of the fire, and first responders reported no injuries. Emergency personnel maneuvered around the traffic rush, and closed down a portion of the road from John’s Fish Market to the Oak Grove Cemetery. It’s too early to assess damage, though the fire was solely contained to the basement. Read more

Jonathan Burke recently walked around Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary with his daughter Maggie, continuing a beloved family tradition. Burke describes his view of the shimmering Vineyard Sound stretching before them, and of the Elizabeth Islands dotting the horizon. For Maggie, who lives in New York City, the outing served as a reminder of the Island refuge that she hopes to return to someday. Read more
