Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
History was made on a different island on this day in 1963: the closing of the federal prison on Alcatraz Island in California. This prison held some dangerous prisoners, like the mobster Al Capone. In the spirit of not going to jail, it’s nice to know today is also National Common Courtesy Day. Be nice to each other out there! If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Sustaining a family tradition
Island fishermen are worried over the impacts of offshore wind, and while Vineyard Wind has announced a program to compensate some, Islanders won’t be included. A teenage, third generation, Vineyard lobster fisher shares his reluctance and fear about getting into an industry that continues to confront new and bigger hurdles. Read that story here.
The Vineyard's 2040 vision
By 2040, Vineyard towns plan to use 100 percent renewable energy, in line with the state's plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at least 85 percent by 2050. A new report from the Martha's Vineyard Commission details how the Island uses its energy currently, and what will need to change in the coming decades. The transition will require new undersea electrical cables, the Steamship Authority switching to electric ferries, homeowners installing electric heat pumps, and more. Read about that here.

Meet the new Chilmark principal
After a months-long process, a new Chilmark School principal has been selected. Kate Squire, a fourth grade teacher at Willard Elementary School, will step into her new role this summer. Squire told the Times she is looking forward to fostering relationships in the school community. Read more here.

The MV Times: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?

The Tower Hill land, once known as the Dancing Hills, is considered by many a sacred Island space. Standing on the ridge top, you're at one of the highest points on Martha's Vineyard. This 3.01-acre parcel looks out over the trees of Red Farm and the dramatic blue expanse of Vineyard Sound. It's easy to understand why this property is so special. There's a generous, designated, building envelope of 1.41 acres to allow a buyer to build a significant house with multi-level views of the water, as well as additional structures with proper permitting. Thoughtful planning and preparation of the Tower Hill Declaration for the area creates a deeded view easement and a greenbelt area to preserve the serenity, privacy, and experience of being surrounded by nature, while still being minutes away from West Tisbury center. The abutting lots have already been developed, demonstrating the type of home, landscape, and views possible for 38 Fire Tower Road. The property is staked, and surveyed with paths cleared to make showing easy. NHESP requirements met. Perc test and well are in.
Quote of the Day
"With Vineyard Wind and South Fork and all the others, we’re not talking about an inconvenience for a year or two. We’re talking 20 years until decommissioning. And then it starts all over again [...] We’re talking a lifetime of inconvenience."
— Jason Gale on the negative effects of wind turbine projects on future local fishermen

Hot Topic Comment
"The citizens of MV and especially Oak Bluffs are at cross roads. Do we want to remain the quaint Island we all cherish or move towards major commercial/mining zones in 3 residential areas in Oak Bluffs."

Hot Topic Letter
"At that meeting, more than 200 parents gathered in person and online, vented frustrations with school leadership, and suggested that ELL programs were draining resources, resulting in a steady stream of parents pulling their children out of the schools. There were worries expressed of an "us versus them" culture emerging."
— Charles Sennott on a meeting between Brazilian parents and Superintendent Richie Smith over cultural acceptance concerns in Island schools
