Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s opening night of the M.V. Film Festival, and we hope you pick up the beautiful guide they produced for the event. It was inside your MV Times last week and contains everything you need to know about this annual Island tradition! Speaking of films, Happy Birthday to Spike Lee, who turns 67 today. We love birthdays around here. And those silly candles that you can’t blow out. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Making Island beaches accessible
Prompted by a survey to beach managers last summer and follow-up site visits, an Island collaborative is making a number of recommendations to improve accessibility for beaches. Things like extending access pads to the lower-tide mark and providing more access to beach wheelchairs. The study found that most, if not all, beaches need some work. Read that story here.

Shipping concerns
A proposed project by Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard has some Tisbury officials concerned about it, despite it being in Oak Bluffs. The proposed location is in a part of Oak Bluffs that juts into and abuts Tisbury land, and it’s one of the areas where Oak Bluffs is considering overlay districts for light industrial mixed-use development. While some Tisbury officials want the project to go before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, the Oak Bluffs planning board is not quite sure about that. Read more here.

Steamship delays
The ongoing construction to replace a pier at the Steamship Authority’s Vineyard Haven terminal has reduced the number of available slips to one for the Island, causing delays for customers. The SSA general manager said these delays were within expectations and explained safety concerns that were raised. Read more here.
MEETINGS

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission meets tomorrow at 7 pm. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"They are like an angel of death when they come into the forest and get a head of steam going. It’s humbling, and we ought to be humble in front of this force of nature,"
— Executive director of Sheriff’s Meadow, Adam Moore, said in response to invasive beetle infestations in Island forests

Hot Topic Comment
"Our oceans are warming at an alarming rate. Warmer oceans store more energy leading to more violent storms with even higher windspeed. See where this is going?"
— Peter Norris on the conclusion of the South Fork Wind farm project

Hot Topic Letter
"It is time to move on from this embarrassing episode, and seek peaceful compromise rather than the nuclear route of public prohibition. Fewer lawsuits coupled with broader public involvement will go a long way to forming our much-needed reconciliation. After all, sunlight is the best disinfectant."
— Richard Thompson on public accessibility to Chappaquiddick beaches

Today: I’m not sure this is full, but if it’s not, you ought to sign up. Workshop Series: Linoleum Printmaking with artist Althea Freeman-Miller. She’s our talented neighbor on Beach Road, and I love her work. Time to free your inner artist. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

Check out the SailMV Winter Dinner Lecture Series; tonight it’s about the ocean’s twilight zone…the midwater depths and what lives there. At the Black Dog Tavern (which is very close to the office, hence I don’t have to walk far to eat eggs covered with cheese). 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I have always admired Jack Ryan’s work. So meticulous. His drawings are made using pointillism, tiny dots in shades of gray and black. Amazing. Exhibit at Mocha Mott’s in Vineyard Haven. Anytime from 6 am to 5-ish pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
Need to use up extra produce or a stale baguette? Try the recipe for Vegetable Casserole, shared by West Tisbury town columnist Hermine Hull several years ago. It includes tomatoes, cheese, bread crumbs, olives, fresh herbs, and zucchini or other ingredients, making it delicious on its own or tossed over pasta or rice.
