Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Tomorrow is the Island Cup, the annual tradition when the Vineyard football team squares off with Nantucket. And new this year, it’s the Golden Anchor — trophies going to the winners in the boys' and girls' soccer and field hockey games. The weekend has been dubbed as the Battle in the Atlantic. Go Vineyard! If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Trustees dispute bridge ownership
At a continued public hearing on the Trustees of Reservations’ over-sand vehicle permit applications for its Chappy properties, the Edgartown conservation commission took into consideration a request by the town’s select board asking that the Trustees allocate OSV sticker sale revenue to the upcoming reconstruction of Dike Bridge. Although the Trustees say they are motivated to find a solution to mitigating the deterioration of the bridge, they deny ownership over any of it. Here’s that story.
Menemsha pedestrian access
With another summer having come and gone, Chilmark officials discussed how things went in Menemsha, the town’s popular tourist destination. While it was smoother for Chilmark Police, there were still some concerns about Menemsha’s layout, particularly pedestrian safety. Read more here.

A special designation
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School announced that they will be recognized by the Special Olympics for embracing what it means to be inclusive on and off the field. The high school will hold a ceremony during a unified basketball game this upcoming week. It’s not the first time the high school has been recognized by the organization. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"Basically, when I was in Vietnam, I was in one place doing one job, and then they grabbed me and used me to do a triage, because they just had [soldiers] come in one after the other. It could be anywhere between eight to 11, 12 guys in the chopper, wounded or dead … Basically, for each and every guy, I had to play God. I had three other guys who were under me, but I made the decision for all of those guys. It really has a psychological [impact]."
— Benjamin Mayhew III during his time as a medic in Vietnam

Hot Topic Letter
"Martha's Vineyard boasts a close community made up of many upper-class members, all of whom are consumers of electronic goods. In a society where we have become dependent on the luxuries technology provides us, we see them as impossible to live without.  As consumers, we have the leverage to force companies to enact the change we want."
— Lindsey Mahoney writes to us about electronics use and being responsible in our consumerism

Staying in?
Many autumns ago, Laura Wainwright adapted a recipe that she was given for Nantucket Cranberry Pie, but it turns out the dessert is not really a pie, and it's also named after the other island. Just between us, we'll call it the Vineyard Cranberry Cake. No matter how you slice it, this would be delicious with a dollop of ice cream or a whipped topping.

Yo-Yo magic
Eighteen students with the All-Island School Orchestra got a special treat recently — a Yo-Yo Ma solo performance. The legendary cellist played Shostakovich’s "Cello Concertos" No. 1 and No. 2. Their ticket price was $10 for an event that would ordinarily cost at least 10 times as much. "It was total chaos, but I thought it was too good of an opportunity to miss," said the teacher who made it all happen. Read the story here.
