Woven with indigenous history

Creativity flows through artist Julia Marden, and likely her most intensive undertaking has been a stunning, full-size twined Turkey Feather Mantle. Shown above, the mantle is the first made by a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe in 400 years. As she describes, the garments were made for someone with status and represent the height of Wampanoag twine work. Read more

Film festival turns 25

The Martha’s Vineyard film festival grew out of a pitch at a wrap party 25 years ago. While it still carries the same spirit of providing access to independent films, its programming and network have grown significantly. Read more. Three finalists for Edgartown principal

The Edgartown School is nearing the end of its search for a new principal, narrowing down their search from 12 initial applicants to three finalists — Deborah DeBettencourt, current Assistant Principal at Edgartown School; Kate Campbell, principal at Attleboro High School; and Justine DeOliveira, assistant principal at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Superintendent Richie Smith praised the candidates for their administrative strength and community-driven leadership styles. Read more


A housing delay

The 60-unit affordable housing project Tackenash Knoll, formerly called Southern Tier, has been hit by a two-year delay to when it is expected to complete construction. The Island Housing Trust project had been hindered by a backlog in the state funding process. Still, other projects in the nonprofit’s pipeline are not expected to be impacted. Read more

Accounting for climate change

This spring, the M.V. Commission will apply for a grant to fund a report on economic impacts of climate change to the Island. Commission climate change coordinator Liz Durkee writes here about the threats of stronger storms, shrinking beaches, and costly adaptations. The report will help the Island to prepare itself. If you’re want some lighthearted musical fun, the West Tisbury Library will host a ukulele jam session. The group welcomes all age and ability ranges, and guitar and banjo players. Brief instruction will be provided with emphasis on strumming and having a good time. Ukuleles are available for borrow at the library.
