Treading water in the insurance market

State Senator Julian Cyr has filed two bills — one to increase homeowners' accessibility to private flood insurance, and another to open grant funding to residents looking to fortify their homes. But as key questions about the insurance market remain unanswered, an insurance expert says the bills are good conversation starters, but that finding the silver bullet is a much more complex and difficult question. Contested in Oak Bluffs

It’s election season on the Island, and Oak Bluffs candidates for town clerk introduced themselves to voters last night. Three are running for the position, including a long-time select board member. All of their positions on the issues were very similar, each embracing the idea of digitizing records and making the office more accessible. Read more

EPA asked to revoke Vineyard Wind permit

ACK for Whales, a Nantucket group against offshore wind, filed a petition to the federal government on Tuesday asking it to reassess and possibly revoke Vineyard Wind's Clean Air Act permit. This permit is a requirement for the company's wind farm project. The challenge is the latest of several against Vineyard Wind, joining petitions from a national coalition of fishing industry groups and from a conservative think tank. Read more

Towns to tackle housing production

Local boards across the Island have started creating a town-by-town plan to address housing issues. The idea is to make a five-year action plan and further identify the Island's specific housing needs. The next step is hearing from Vineyarders directly via a series of meetings in each town. Those start next month. Read more

Police look to reach the elderly

"In my experience, older citizens are less likely to reach out to the police than younger people," says O.B. Police Chief Jonathan Searle. To encourage the elderly to reach out when in need, officers are practicing community policing, meant to build trust and respect between law enforcement and communities. O.B. police are now meeting people where they are, establishing a presence at the council on aging and Island Elderly Housing. Read more

Waterview Land, West Tisbury

Sponsored by Tea Lane Associates

The Tower Hill land, once known as the Dancing Hills, is considered by many a sacred Island space. Standing on the ridge top, you're at one of the highest points on Martha's Vineyard. This 3.01 acre parcel looks out over the trees of Red Farm and the dramatic blue expanse of Vineyard Sound. It's easy to understand why this property is so special. There's a generous designated building envelope of 1.41 acres to allow a Buyer to build a significant house with multi level views of the water and additional structures with proper permitting. Thoughtful planning and preparation of the Tower Hill Declaration for the area creates a deeded view easement and greenbelt area to preserve the serenity, privacy and experience of being surrounded by nature while still being minutes away from West Tisbury center. The abutting lots have already been developed, demonstrating the type of home, landscape, and view possible for 38 Fire Tower Road. Outlands Design has created architectural rendering, shown via the CGI imagery photos to help envision a home, infinity pool, driveway and landscaping. The property is staked, and surveyed with paths cleared to make showing easy. NHESP requirements met. Perc test done and the well (12 gpm) has been installed.
