Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day 40 years ago, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial opened in Washington, D.C., after a procession of thousands of veterans of the war marched to the site. There was some early opposition to the simple, black, v-shaped design but it grew to become one of the most visited memorials in the country as family and friends left offerings and etchings where their loved ones' names appeared. Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
Mark Alexander and his wife Connie traveled to one of the northernmost parts of Iceland this summer to read out loud a dedication to his father and fellow U.S. Coast Guardsmen who were aboard the Northland, a submarine chaser in World War II. The crew passed the Arctic Circle 80 years ago. Read more here about Alexander’s journey and what it means to him and why he shared his story near Veterans Day.
The expanded Edgartown Stop & Shop opened on Friday. The multiphase expansion was supposed to start in 2019. However, litigation aimed at halting the project slowed down the process. The suit was eventually dismissed in January of this year. Construction was wrapping up late last week. Read more here.
The M.V. Film Center hosted a special screening and panel discussion with local veterans and housing advocates over the weekend, as part of Veterans Day activities. ‘Mending the Line’ follows a soldier’s struggles with returning to civilian life. Panelists also discussed their own experiences, and shared their emotional responses to the film. And money was raised to support housing for veterans in Oak Bluffs. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
"If there are year-round bass here, then we can start asking questions about how [the bass] move, and where they reside within the pond, what age group and size are we looking at here, are there sexually mature animals, and are they spawning here if they’re year-round."
— Scott Bennett explaining the significance of non-migrating bass that could be living in Squibnocket Pond

Hot Topic Comment
"All the veterans are sensational – for their service and for sharing their experiences. I am not a veteran, but have friends and family members who have served from WWII to present."
— Heather Storm comments on our Veterans Day coverage

Joint class in session
Class is in session at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. There is no exam, but the topic is joint replacements. The hospital welcomed Dr. Kevin Bowman aboard in May last year, and since then he has performed nearly 50 knee replacements and 34 total hip replacements. And joint school is an in-person learning experience presented by the orthopedic and rehab team that walks you through the process of receiving a replacement. Read more in our Health Beat here.
