Taking the plunge

Islanders welcomed 2025 with a bold tradition, the polar plunge. From Menemsha to State Beach, groups dove into frigid waters, embracing the experience as both a reset and health benefit. At Eastville Beach, trainer Triva Emery led her group, emphasizing the mental clarity and physical relief cold immersion provides. Later, Rebecca Pierce and friends, along with kids and dogs, continued their monthly ritual, celebrating the sense of renewal that comes with each plunge. Participants faced the icy 40-degree water with determination, laughter, and the shared goal of starting the year right. Read more

The Blue Line is for Vineyarders only

Vineyarders waiting to get their vehicles off-Island might appreciate the upcoming expansion of the Blue Line. Starting on Saturday, the SSA is launching a 90-day trial run of an Islanders-only vehicle standby line. A rolling limit of 12 cars will be allowed in the line, with the opportunity for more depending on space availability. The general standby line, often used by visitors and Islanders, will be eliminated during the trial run. Read more

Hundreds of Vineyarders lose power

Falling tree limbs knocked out power for over 300 up-Island residents this morning. Eversource's power outage map showed 250 Chilmarkers out of power along North Road, and 115 West Tisbury customers around Old County Road. The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for the Vineyard until 10 pm Thursday, saying gusts that day might reach 50 miles per hour. Eversouce has since indicated that power has been restored to the Island. Read more

Maddie Scott on volunteering

Maddie Scott has been a volunteer firefighter on-Island for a decade, has fostered 29 dogs through Sandy Paws, and has helped out at the Harbor Homes shelter every winter since 2020. She told The Times that the moments that mean the most to her are finishing puzzles with a shelter guest, forming a connection with someone who is unhoused, and seeing pets learn to open up to people. Quote of the Day

“I sleep with one eye open in case anyone needs anything.”

—Maddie Scott makes time to volunteer at Harbor Homes.

Waterview Land, West Tisbury

The Tower Hill land, once known as the Dancing Hills, is considered by many a sacred Island space. Standing on the ridge top, you're at one of the highest points on Martha's Vineyard. This 3.01 acre parcel looks out over the trees of Red Farm and the dramatic blue expanse of Vineyard Sound. It's easy to understand why this property is so special. There's a generous designated building envelope of 1.41 acres to allow a Buyer to build a significant house with multi level views of the water and additional structures with proper permitting. Thoughtful planning and preparation of the Tower Hill Declaration for the area creates a deeded view easement and greenbelt area to preserve the serenity, privacy and experience of being surrounded by nature while still being minutes away from West Tisbury center.
