Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
The first episode of "Saturday Night Live" aired on this day in 1975. We were mere babies then, or at least some of us were. It’s also the birthday of Elmore Leonard and Thích Nhất Hạnh, two very fine writers. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

‘Our worst nightmare’
The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center will be hosting an interfaith service on Friday to pray for the people of Israel. Meanwhile, The Times connected with a MVRHS graduate living in Israel and spoke to Islanders who are grappling with the violence and war that began on Saturday. In one telling, a family is essentially living in their bomb shelter. Read our coverage here.
Not yet for another swimming pier
Tisbury Conservation Commission member John Best came before the Oak Bluffs Select Board with a proposal: conducting a feasibility study for a swimming pier at Eastville Point Beach. However, the board members were not keen on spending money when it was uncertain what their town’s appetite would be for the project. Read more here.

A capoeira showcase
Members of Sinhá Capoeira recently came to the Island and showcased the unique Brazilian art form of capoeira to Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School students and teachers. Students got to witness and learn how capoeira is done. Get the details here.

Quote of the Day
"[Gaining citizenship] feels great. I have my freedom right now — I get to be there for my child, my family."
— Lyudmila Lewandowski, who emigrated from Bulgaria, after a naturalization ceremony held in Edgartown

Hot Topic Comment
"Given the recent revelation about the vaccination rate at the Chilmark school, this comes as no surprise. I would venture to guess that a fair number of students at the Charter School are not vaccinated as well."
— Jim Ventry on contact tracing underway after a case of
chickenpox identified at the Charter School

Hot Topic Letter
"It’s classic up-Island hypocrisy. They only use the term when it’s to their advantage. If it’s something they don’t want, they are 'Chilmark residents.' For example, the town of Chilmark used Community Preservation Act money, public money, to redo the Squibnocket parking lot. They won’t, however, let Islanders on the beach there, because they are selfish, and don’t really care about Islanders."
— Erik Albert writes to us about we calls
up-Island hypocrisy surrounding the turf field

Today: No surprise that around 5:30 pm is the best time to try a Restorative Reset Yoga Class. That’s about the time of day when my eyes are blurry from computer screens and my brain is running on fumes. Edgartown library. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

I love quilts. I’m just not sure I have the patience to actually make one. Maybe I could find out if I went to the Quilting Circle at the West Tisbury library. Wonder if they’d just let me buy one of theirs? 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The best part of this event is that you can eat it after you make it. Take the kids to the Vineyard Haven library after school for a Haunted Gingerbread House Craft. 3:30 pm. –C.B.
