'We still do exist'

Members of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Sunday. The event featured an Indigenous drum ceremony and speeches from various Wampanoag tribe members, who had the message that tribal citizens have endured much over millennia on the Island but are still here and proud. Cleanup on the seafloor

Recovery began Sunday for part of the Vineyard Wind turbine blade that broke off this summer. The work is still ongoing. This comes a few days after Nantucket’s select board announced that it is hiring a “nationally-recognized damages expert” to assess harm to their environment and economy. Read more


Davis to stay on as general manager for a year

Steamship Authority general manager Bob Davis announced last month that he would be stepping down. Today, the Steamship board agreed to how that will work. Davis will fulfill the remainder of his contract as general manager and then in a year — November 2025 — he will serve as a senior advisor to the board for no more than 18 months. Read more

Cancer support group at 30

For three decades now, the M.V. Cancer Support group has been coming together so that no one has to face cancer alone. The group began in 1985 when Kate Healy placed an ad in the paper. “I have cancer,” it read. “If you do, or are close to someone who does, we can help each other.” A rejected name early on for the group was the Bosom Buddies.
