Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s school vacation week and we bet there are a lot of kids out there hoping for enough snow overnight so they can go sledding tomorrow. We’d be into it too, except we’re old. Meanwhile, if they were here, we’d wish a Happy Birthday to Elizabeth Taylor and John Steinbeck. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Treating the Medicine Lots
The 97-acre Medicine Lots is undergoing a habitat restoration project by the Nature Conservancy. The West Tisbury property is home to rare species and is one of the few undeveloped places on the Island with frost bottoms. The area will be managed to promote biodiversity, and the first phase is expected to be finished in the coming weeks. Check out the details here.
Snow may impact ferries
While it won’t be the windiest of nights, the Steamship Authority issued a travel advisory stating its ferries may face disruptions from the snowfall. When that snow is coming remains a bit unclear, but keep an eye out if you plan to take a ride out tonight or tomorrow morning. Here are the details.

MV Dems have a new leader
The Democratic Council of Martha’s Vineyard announced its officers for 2023-2025. Often referred to as MV Dems, the organization serves to inform Island voters of political goings on and aims to promote public participation in local, state, and national elections. Here’s more on the newly elected executive committee.

Quote of the Day
"Post oak is actually on the very northern tip of its range here. Very uncommon in Massachusetts."
Mike Whittemore, steward for the Nature Conservancy, on the Medicine Lots conservation work

Hot Topic Comment
Bringing comments back online sure has generated a lot of comments. This one comes from Vicki Divoli: "Your rules seem good, if followed and enforced. I would add one more: there should be a time period between when a poster can post again. We hear too much from the same people."

Hot Topic Letter
Ed Mossey in West Tisbury wrote to thank those who helped him recently: "I had a run in with a deer on my Harley on Old County Road. The deer made out okay, I did not."
Today: I’m psyched about this one. Gina Stanley, owner of ArtCliff Diner, leads a Summer Meals Cooking Class at the Sailing Camp Park. Must be 21 or older (that makes it safe for me by decades). 6 pm. –Connie Berry

"Grease" is the word tonight. Enjoy Monday Night at the Movies at the M.V. Playhouse. $5 dollars cash. 6 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow:
The kind folks at the West Tisbury library host Free Community Soup and Bread Lunch during the February school break this week. All ages are welcome. 11:30 am to 1 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
To make a warm casserole dish with hearty greens, try Baked Broccoli Rabe, shared by Abigail Higgins many winters ago for her Garden Notes column. You can skimp on the leaves and pour on the cheese...no, wait...scratch that last bit...it came from our own notes for the Times kitchen...

Community collaborations
The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society has been celebrating the many important organizations that make up our community for decades. Through film collaborations that highlight the important work of institutions like the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, the Peter H. Luce Playreaders, and many others, the film society provides clarity to the work these folks do, and garners support for Island initiatives. Read the story here.
