Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Some news industry trivia today: The BBC ended its so-called "toddler’s truce" on this day in 1957. The station had no programming between 6 and 7 pm, which was intended to help parents put their children to bed during the war. Now we have news 24/7 and conveniently right here in your inbox. Also, remember this day for a future trivia question: Our reporter Daniel Greenman says he recorded his 100th article for the MV Times today. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Skyrocketing HVAC costs
West Tisbury is looking to bring upgrades to the town’s library HVAC system, but a new estimate on the cost is staggering. The town had already received approval to appropriate $1.2 million for the project. Now the town may be asking voters for an additional $1.8 million. It comes after another Island town last year received bad news about their HVAC costs. Read that story
here.

Navigating a loan
The USDA has loaned the Navigator Homes project $8 million, as part of $53 million in USDA loans approved for the homes. The funding will pay for the homes' construction and operation costs. Starting this summer, Navigator Homes also plans to raise around $3 million for an artistic commons space and social events for residents. Check that out
here.

Reservation results
The Steamship Authority had a strong showing for its summer reservations. Aside from some long wait times, the website was working properly and the SSA released some data on the day's reservations. Interestingly, while the number of vehicle reservations went down for Nantucket, the Vineyard saw an uptick. Read more

Quote of the Day
"Maybe what we’ve been is remiss in making sure we have enough voices of enough diverse backgrounds at the table, to make sure that [the] programs we have in place are really the right programs."
— Amy Houghton on encouraging more diverse representation on Island school committees

Hot Topic Comment
"And let’s not forget Hurricane Carol! The A&P was totally flooded and there were tea bags floating around on Water Street."
— Katherine Scott comments on our story about frustrations from flooding near Five Corners

Hot Topic Letter
"The petition for a community-based committee to manage the town’s tennis courts has well over 100 signatures, and is reflective of deep support, interest, and concern for the future of a strong and successful Chilmark tennis program. Those proposing the bylaw continue to be willing to engage with conversations on how that could and should happen. Unfortunately, some on CTAC have refused to engage in conversation, and instead send falsehoods and fear into our community."
— Marcy Gringlas and Joel Greenberg write about an ongoing dispute over a tennis program in Chilmark

Today: Head to Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern tonight for Unplugged with Phil daRosa and Isaac Taylor. These two fellas are a pleasure to hear. Philly D will be bringing some friends along too. You can do the same. Doors open at 6:30 pm. –Connie Berry

The TBD Improv Troupe is back at it upstairs at the Barn Bowl & Bistro tonight. I secretly would love to be a standup comedian, the only thing is that I’d rather do it sitting down. I get tired easily. 7 pm. –C.B.
This weekend: Join my friend Valerie at Peaked Hill Yoga in Chilmark. She’s all about freedom of movement. I would be too, if I could move. 9 am. The Friends of the Oak Bluffs Library kicked off their Book Drive and they’re looking for your donations for this fundraiser. 10 am to 3 pm. I love a good book. Go online and register for the Polly Hill Arboretum Winter Walk — beautiful colors and textures. 10 am. There’s a Sheep Shearing Shindig at the Ag Hall. Love this event. Free. 11 am to 1 pm. Love’s Leaping over at Featherstone this time of year. Check out the February exhibit. Noon to 4 pm. Vineyard House hosts Recovery Dharma, using Buddhist practices and principles to enable recovery from addiction of all kinds. A little discussion, a little meditation. Sounds a little awesome. Hybrid. 1 pm. The West Tisbury library offers a Jazz Documentary Screening and Discussion hosted by MVY Radio’s Dave Kish. 3 pm. The Louisa Gould Gallery brings us new mixed-media art by local artist Deborah T. Colter with an Artist’s Reception at 4 pm. The Oak Bluffs library screens Best Picture Nominees each week in February leading up to the 2024 Oscars. But I can’t find which film it is this week, so it’ll be just like Oscar night … you won’t know what it is until you get there. 4 pm. Enjoy the Rosie Show with Rose Guerin, Don Groover, Buck Shank, and Steve Gallagher live at the P.A. Club. Bring your dancing shows and good vibes. This might be your only chance to watch me make an idiot out of myself on the dancefloor this weekend. 8 pm. –C.B.

On Sunday, the Unitarian Universalist Society in Vineyard Haven has its service at 10 am, and this week it’s all about "Letting Ourselves Get Lost." The quiet pace of this time of year is a good time for deep reflection. 10 am. Want a really good excuse to shop? The gym at the Edgartown School will have just what you’re looking for at its Indoor Sidewalk Sale. Proceeds benefit the eighth grade class trip. 10 am to 4 pm. Come to the West Tisbury library anytime during open hours in February for a Winter Walk Scavenger Hunt. Search outdoors for different items, then come inside to the children’s room for your prize. I want a prize. Free. 10 am to 4 pm. Transformational speaker Constance Messmer will give the third in a series of talks at the West Tisbury library, this one on sensitive and psychic kids. Children are welcome to attend. She is pretty freaking amazing. I’ve seen her action. 2:30 pm. The Climate Book Club also happens at the West Tisbury library. How do they do all of this? I can barely put my shoes on in the morning. They’ll talk about "Not the End of the World" by Hannah Ritchie. 4 pm. The Film Center screens Oscar-nominated Live Action Shorts. Predicting the winners makes a fun game, especially in February. 7:30 pm. Speaking of games, I’m long overdue for a little Yahtzee. Maybe I can rectify that situation on this long and cozy weekend. Have fun and stay safe — hopefully we can do both. –C.B.

Staying in?
Here's a great recipe for using up all the condiments in your fridge: Barbecue Baked Beans, by Chef Dan Sauer. It can be made into a super-flavorful side dish, a topping over rice or toast, or a filling for burritos or tacos.

Does your family have a recipe to share with the community? Send it to us, along with a photo of the dish and a brief backstory if you have one, to recipes@mvtimes.com.

A kitchen match
Fire Catering is owned by husband and wife team Jeffrey and Viktoriya ("Vika") Duarte, and it's a six-month-old venture in Aquinnah. Jeffrey is a member of the Tribe and Vika is a first-generation American with family in Ukraine. Their business works out of town hall for now, but the two hope to have their own space at some point (PS: The chicken wings sound fire). Read their story here.
