It was one for the books. A tense, back-and-forth spelling bee for the top spellers from all of the Island’s middle schools went nearly 20 rounds. The winning word was “jalapeño,” after a misspelling of “noxious.” The winner came out of Edgartown. Read more

Steamship tables public member in interviews

The ferry line’s board voted today to table a discussion about whether to allow a nonvoting member of the public into its interview process for a new general manager. Robert Jones, board representative for Barnstable, said approving any of the multiple requests received would be unprecedented. The board also authorized outgoing GM Robert Davis to enter contract negotiations with a UK-based firm to help look for his replacement. Read more

A task force to tackle homeless issues?

It’s been a few weeks since the Island’s only homeless shelter moved out of its location at M.V. Community Services, and towns are starting to grapple with the reality of a growing unhoused population with nowhere to go in the summer, and no permanent location planned next winter. West Tisbury posed the idea of creating an Island-wide task force to look for solutions. Read more
