New details on homeless clearing

Ahead of a public meeting tomorrow with the head of the department of conservation, we are reporting new details from documents we obtained about the homeless encampment clearing from over the summer. The details show that the state had been trying to coordinate a clearing shortly before news broke on the Island’s hidden homeless, but that they believed there was only a handful of people present, if that. They also reaffirm beliefs that a lack of resources are available to manage the state forest. Read more


Dive into the equity audit

The public schools' equity audit results have been public since last week, and we took a closer look at some of the feedback on Vineyard public schools. A significant share of parents wanted fairer application of disciplinary policies, which was also reflected in instructors' feedback. Bullying and drug use was also a concern for over one-fifth of parents. You can also see the results for yourself on the school's website. Click here to read our coverage.


A new chief in town, for now

Longtime Island resident Lieutenant Chris Dolby has been named acting Chief of the Edgartown Police Department following Bruce McNamee’s retirement. The search for a new chief is being conducted by Public Safety Consultants LLC, and the final candidates will be announced by December. Read more


Packing the truck

Island residents have helped coordinate a supply run to South Carolina and to victims of Hurricane Helene. We were there this morning as the truck was getting loaded. Word is they are heading out tomorrow.

Quilt through the fall and winter with the Quilting Circle at the West Tisbury Library, tonight from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Quilting Circle quilts will also be on display in the Library’s Community Room throughout the month of October. See them at a reception on Saturday, October 26, from 12-1:30pm. Join the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group (MVSG) and Chilmark and West Tisbury’s Shellfish Departments to learn about the municipal oyster farm visible from shore, seeding the pond, and oyster habitat restoration.
