Announced Saturday night during our Islanders Write mid-winter celebration, we are receiving a large grant from a Vineyard family that will help us hire a local resident to join our newsroom over the next few years, what we are calling the Island Writer position. The position, the first of which was recently named, will help us tell the stories of Islanders for generations to come. Read more about the grant opportunity and what it will mean. From the courts, we are reporting that law enforcement has brought a felony charge against a woman for leaving two children in a car for several hours. One of the children has been flown to Boston in critical care. The woman has been held on bail while awaiting a hearing in April. Read more

Katama Meadows headed to MVC hearing |
A proposed, nearly 300-bedroom project is being proposed on Meeting House Way in Edgartown, the latest among several housing developments before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The project, called Katama Meadows, is scheduled to undergo a public hearing starting this Thursday. Read more

The Massachusetts FAIR Plan is used by over 36 percent of Islanders, and has a cap of $1 million in coverage for rebuilding costs for each home they cover. New changes to their coverage options have been announced that would help homeowners looking for more than that cap, but local agents say this may not affect Islanders for a while. Read more
