Police report a death at IHT construction site

We're following a report today that a construction worker died at Meshacket Commons, an Island Housing Trust site. Police say the worker fell from his ladder on the second story into the basement, and that he was later pronounced dead at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. This is a developing story. Read more here


Mass General Brigham announces layoffs

Mass General Brigham, the parent organization of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, recently announced that it will lay off staff across its hospital system. Officials say the move is to conduct an organizational restructuring in preparation for a projected budget shortfall of $250 million. Whether the Vineyard will be hit by the layoff remains to be seen, and hospital representatives won’t tell The Times. Read more


Towns douse basement fire

No one was reported injured in a basement fire this morning on Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road, for which a portion of the road was closed to early commuters. Tisbury Fire Chief Patrick Rolson said damage caused by the fire was minimal, and that the cause of the incident is under investigation. Read more


Four years for final bank heist suspect

Omar O. Johnson was sentenced on Monday to four years for his role in the 2022 robbery of nearly $40,000 from Rockland Trust Bank. Johnson pleaded guilty in 2023; prosecutors say he was one of three men wearing masks and carrying handguns. Read more
