Federal office stops funding Island veterans’ program |
 |
The federal Veterans Affairs (VA) department is canceling around $80,000 in yearly funds for an M.V. Community Services program that offers counseling for people with trauma from war. The director of the Island program said they will look elsewhere for money. This comes as the VA promised last month to get rid of hundreds of "non-mission-critical or duplicative contracts" and redirect that money to health care, benefits, and services for the department's beneficiaries. Veterans on the Island were dismayed by the department's decision. Read more

Tisbury harbormaster Gary Kovack has accepted an offer to become Edgartown’s harbormaster. He comes with 16 years of Coast Guard experience, more than half a decade as an Edgartown police officer, and less than a year as Tisbury’s harbormaster. He told The Times that Tisbury's harbor department is on a good path as he prepares to leave. Read more

A fire on Donalbain Close in Edgartown was put out after being contained to one room in the home's basement. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Read more

In other news, the Vineyard Haven Library is now closed Fridays in preparation for its addition and renovation, and will relocate soon to a temporary spot on 15 Church Street.
