COO reign to end

Mark Higgins joined the Steamship in April of last year, and the Times learned today that he is resigning. He’s the second top official in the Steamship Authority to announce his resignation recently, after the general manager announced in September that he would be stepping down. It also comes with the Steamship on the hot seat and a pubic information meeting planned on Tuesday. Read more

Chance for Spring Street scrutiny to intensify

The M.V. Commission voted 10–4 yesterday to accept 97 Spring Street for a thorough review as a development of regional impact. The commission’s next step for the property, which is intended to house Vineyard Wind workers in a residential district, will be a public hearing. The review process could also lead to restrictions on the project. Read more

West Tisbury votes to support year-rounders

West Tisbury has decided to adopt a residential tax exemption in an effort to help year-round residents struggling with high living costs. The tax measure will bring higher costs to second homeowners. The change has been controversial in the town, and the select board was also split on whether the exemption was fair. Read more

Break-in investigation expands to Oak Bluffs

Oak Bluffs Police is joining Tisbury in an investigation into car break-ins after a number of vehicles in Oak Bluffs were reported to have been broken into overnight. Police are encouraging residents to lock their cars. Also, West Tisbury suggests looking out for people snatching deliveries, as the holiday season is coming soon. Read more

Hello, Barnstable!

The Steamship’s latest vessel — the Barnstable — pulled into Massachusetts’ waters on Wednesday with horns blaring. It’s undergoing some work before subbing into the Nantucket lineup. See a video of the Barnstable rolling into the Steamship’s Fairhaven terminal here.

"Snake Hollow" full of sound

Ron Jackson reviews the fourth outing of the Tristan Israel Band, "Snake Hollow," which he says might be Israel's best yet. Recorded in West Tisbury, the album's highlights range from the groovy "House Always Wins," to "Virginia," a song about an old love written long ago, to the soul-funk "Gotta Believe," and much more. The MV Ballroom Dancers invites you to enjoy an evening of off-season dancing and music, with performances by local favorites. On Sunday, Becky and Rich from the Convertibles will be performing.
