Fix Five Corners
Vineyard Haven business owners, anxious to improve flooding at Five Corners, shared their struggles with inundation. The business owners also heard of pending state opportunities to address the intersection, and wanted to work together to represent their interests to the state. Read more here.
Right whale entanglement tied to Maine
NOAA announced today that the rope entangled on a right whale that washed ashore dead late last month originated from Maine. The investigation is still ongoing and the full necropsy hasn’t been released yet. Conservation organizations were quick to condemn the northern state’s lobster industry. Read more here.

A miraculous Valentine’s
It is Valentine’s Day and yesterday was an intense snow storm. That left a Vineyard florist somewhat in a bind as they tried to get their flowers out to the masses. We hear from one Chilmark couple, who — despite the odds — got a pleasant surprise: their dozens of roses were delivered to their front steps. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"They were all interested in not what’s being talked about and researched — for years, I think — but what is actually going on … And what are some of the things that we can do immediately to start mitigating the physical issues that we’re dealing with."
—Teresa Kruszewski on the impact of sea level rise and flooding for Vineyard Haven businesses

Hot Topic Comment
"They are all your fellow Americans, and both sides better figure that out fast because the ship is going down."
—Scott Terry on Chilmark’s search for a Republican to serve on the board of registrars

Hot Topic Letter
"While Vineyard businesses benefit from the growth in truck commerce, it is difficult for Cape residents to identify similar advantages for Cape businesses. The vast majority of Island-bound trucks and goods come directly from off-Cape, and do not involve Cape businesses."
—Damien Kuffler on the Vineyard’s growth impacting Cape port communities

Today: The Playhouse offers us Arnie’s Poetry Cafe with a special program hosted by Fan Ogilvie and Justen Ahren, two of our finest poets. They’ll share their poems and you can bring a poem about love that you love. Free. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

Being part of a Quilting Circle sounds heavenly after the night I had last night. We lost power and I spent the evening trying to calm down three grown men who would never make it on an overnight camping trip. West Tisbury library. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Ever since working on Edible Vineyard with Tina Miller, I have a real respect for farming on M.V. Watch Matt Taylor’s "Deep Roots," short films about Island farmers, at the West Tisbury library. Free and includes popcorn and movie snacks. Or should that be moo-vie snacks? 4 pm. –C.B.
