Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1987, Ben & Jerry’s introduced an iconic ice cream flavor, Cherry Garcia, named after the legendary Grateful Dead lead guitarist and singer, Jerry. Ice cream and cherries remind us of summer. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

An effort toward representation
School committees across the Island are lacking representation from parents of students that are English learners, particularly Portuguese-speaking students that make up a growing portion of Vineyard schools. But administrators and school committee members say they would like that to change, and they are considering ways to incorporate more diverse voices. Read that story here.
Smooth sailing?
The Steamship Authority has been plagued with glitches during the rollout of their summer reservations as we’ve reported before, but the SSA — aside from some long wait times — is reporting that yesterday, when reservations went live, the system held up. And there was a lot of business. Read that story here.

‘A real beacon’
Abby Remer writes a remembrance of Gloria Wong, who passed last month at 95. Wong has been a seasonal resident of the Vineyard in the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association for nearly 60 years, and she moved to the Island year-round 25 years ago. Her faith was a big part of her life. Read the remembrance here.

Vibrant Restaurant Opportunity, Oak Bluffs, Sponsored

Priced to sell, vibrant restaurant opportunity and strong investment. This property is perfect for anyone looking to run a business with an opportunity to build a home onsite. An uncommon asset on Martha's Vineyard. A new owner can construct a home for themselves or perhaps two apartments for a mix of personal use and employee housing or rental units. There is an opportunity to enhance the outdoor seating atmosphere and continue with the 74-seat capacity inside. The building is in great condition as much of it was renovated in 2017, which includes new restaurant equipment (stoves, refrigerators, freezers, all necessary kitchen items), as well as a new propane HVAC system. This is a gem of an opportunity in a really great location. Very easy to step right in to a fully functioning and well-equipped business and design your own home for the property. This area is rapidly changing and becoming a highly desirable area in Oak Bluffs.
Quote of the Day
"For an almost 96-year-old person, a lot of people think that when you get to be that age, you don’t occupy as much of a part in people’s lives, hearts, and community, but she was a dynamic and huge presence right through to the end."
— Bishop Douglass, on the passing of activist and spiritual Gloria Wong

Hot Topic Comment
"Before society runs out of time to deal with this—as too many of us waste precious years buying into dangerous claims that climate change is a "hoax"; or buying the story peddled by some religious leaders that the demise of this beautiful planet was "ordained by God as a punishment for original sin"—it will run out of money."
— Anne Cook, on the flooding of Vineyard Haven businesses

Hot Topic Letter
"We must stop these zoning change proposals. The process has been rushed. Public input is being ignored. Promised informational meetings were not advertised, and fewer in number than promised. A major stakeholder in the changes, who isn’t an O.B. resident, was appointed to a subcommittee. And the meeting minutes for the subcommittee were never taken or shared. The list goes on."
—Susan Desmarais on potential changes to Oak Bluffs zoning bylaws
